Has anyone without a membership actually tried this? I have one already and I have paid for stuff online with a Visa. I just checked and for online purchases you can use Visa, MC, Discover OR AMEX. Now, there might be something specific for this "member number" to allow AMEX only... but that seems a little unlikely.

From the link: Purchase on costco.com must be made with an American Express® Card from 6/27/07–8/26/07.

Nice find! I just about purchased the 42" Vizio 1080p LCD TV (VU42LF). Maybe I'll get it before July 1st, when the $200 discount ends.
LCD TV $999 Shipping $62 Tax $71 Total $1132
Not bad for 1080p

The guy whose number is posted by OP will probably collect tons of money through Costco Cash Back rebates...
You only get Costco rebates from AMEX if you use your OWN AMEX card at Costco...it's tied to the CC not the membership number so there goes that conspiricy theory.

Don't know if this will work because Costco still checks for a Costco membership card.. the gift card is just the payment method (ie replacing an AMEX or Cash).

not only do they check for it as you walk in, but you need it when you check out at the register as well...
Make sure you don't try to cut and paste the member number from the bottom of the page. They left out one of the digits (must not have any page checkers there...)

I think if you went to the store with gift cards sent to you from "Aunt Betty" (or whoever) they would let you shop. How else would you redeem them? I would take it up with management if they tried to require you to buy a membership to redeem their gift cards.
How will the extended warranty that costco offers work for items that you buy during this period, e.g. the Vizio? Do I still get the extra year of warranty + 90 days return policy?

Here's what Costco has to say about their "Cash Card" :
Costco has created another convenient way for members to pay for their purchases: The Costco Cash card.
You must be a Costco member to purchase or reload Costco Cash Cards. Non-members may use the cash cards to shop in the warehouse or online. Costco Cash balances may be used toward membership or merchandise.
The Costco Cash card features include:
A convenient payment option in our warehouses, gas stations, and costco.com No expiration date Are rechargeable at any Costco warehouse location Can be purchased in denominations from $25 to $1,000 A supply card or gas card for businesses A means to provide students with money for food, gas, or school and dormitory necessities, while being able to limit their spending Balance can be accessed on costco.com, the warehouse "red kiosk" or by calling the toll-free number on the back of the card Costco Cash Cards are sent with zero balance. To activate, call the 1-800 number that will be included with your card(s).
Show gift card when walking in. Go to customer service. Go temporary day-pass Shop Go to checkout Show temporary day-pass Wait for manager's approval Pay. Technically you are supposed to use the gift card + cash/ATM to pay. But I've also paid the entire purchase via AMEX as well.
I believe you can also use it for gas now, though I haven't done that.
EDIT guess i was busy typing when everyone else corrected the same misinformation Also Edited for this problem
Lets talk Facts here you do not have to be a member to use a cash card, nor do you need to have a membership card to get in the door or checkout (code 99). But normally a member has to purchase the cash cards for you and then you can go shop without said member.
Next fact although the offer says you have to use AMEX I used visa and my cc has the pending charge on it took 2 hrs before authorization pend charge showed up but it's there.
Since I have been using cash cards for several years to shop @ costco. Ymmv You may have to go to customer service desk to get a white slip and show your drivers lic. or other ID at some stores.

Wow. Nice job giving red to everyone that corrected your statement. You cannot use giftcards/cash/atm at Costco without them asking for your membership card or number. You have trouble dealing with criticism?
DO NOT need a membership card (override code #99) to use cash cards, atm or cash. If I read and understand your post to Yes, they will ask you for your membership card or # at which point you tell them I don't have one please get a sup to to do a code 99/override .
Edit: By the way most cashiers their will not know what you are asking for just ask them for a front end supervisor.

Are Costco.com prices identical to in-store prices?
