Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I could really use some help and advice...
I have a 250GB Western Digital external HD. The plug on the HD enclosure where you connect the AC adapter broke off and was rattling around inside. I need to get some files that are on this HD, so I opened the case, took out the IDE hard drive and connected it to my computer... it just says "hard disk error, press F2 to continue" and just doesn't seem to work. Any ideas how to get it working?
The alternative seems to be buying a new enclosure, but I've never done this before so I have some questions. Do they all come with AC adapters or do you need your own? From what I've seen not all the AC adapter plugs have the same shape plug on the enclosure.
Also, I see that some enclosure say something like "works with up to a 160GB hard drive"... ok, so for some random reason my 250GB wouldn't work, got it. But then half the enclosures don't mention a limit, so how can I know if they'll work?
Finally I see all kinds of different sizes, 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch... how do you know what size to get?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks OP! And thanks alesmith56 for the POWMAX deals!

check your jumper settings, if you are connecting it to a ribbon that already has a ide device on it make sure that this harddrive is set to slave.

Any help would be appreciated. Well, I would check the jumper settings like someone else said. You can only have one master and multiple "slave" drives on one IDE channel/cable. Also, just to make sure I don't miss the obvious, if you don't have windows installed on it, and you plug it in and take off your other one, it's not going to magically boot into windows... it's just a data storage drive. You have to have both connected with your windows drive set to "Master" jumper settings and the data storage drive set to "slave". Your CD-ROM/DVd drive should also probably set to slave (unless that's on a different channel). And 2.5 inch is for laptop disks... smaller looking disks. And 3.5 inch is for regular sized desktop disks.(But if you bought a deal for a 2.5 inch external case... then you're stuck buying laptop hard drives to make it fit). And I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the drive.... I don't know if it matters to the external drive I thought it might have to do something with Windows? I don't know.

It doesn't have a jumper (or whatever the term is for the thing you slide onto 2 of the 8 pins) on it at all. It has no OS on it, just a bunch of saved files.
Wknt, thanks for the info on the enclosure size... this is a full sized desktop HD so I guess I'll buy a 3.5" enclosure and hope it works.
I don't know why SDInformer bothered negging us in the first place. If s/he has better advice let's hear it. What a waste of time. Good luck with the new enclosure. you can always return it if it doesnt work I guess. (if you buy locally)

Only one free hot swappable 3.5 with a large rebate

No jumper is also a setting on some hard drive. You need to find out what hard drive you have (model number), then find out the jumper setting information from its manufacturer website. Some hard drive has "Jumper setting" printed on its label.
Your easiest way of doing it is to set it as Slave drive if your PC's hard drive is set as Master drive. Add it to you PC on the same IDE cable that connects your Master hard drive (assume it has two connectors) Then you will see both hard drives under "My computer", and open it up for file transfer.

Powmax makes excellent products. Period. It is good stuff.
But beware Powmax rebates - from Powmax itself, I mean.
I continue to wait for one after 5-6 months. It is a ChiCom company. Enough said.
Again, their products are first rate and you will not regret buying from them. Just do not expect to receive the rebate. I tried to call their toll-free number, BTW, more than once; it was a nightmare.
Rebate on Coolmax is worst. Not sure about Powmax but its enclosure is worth getting due to the 80mm fan included. It looks like the famous Apricorn but I have that one and it has many small holes for venting, not long narrow slots. Also, I doubt this Powmax has the stable and fast Cypress chipset. Even Apricorn has switched to Inito chipset to save cost. NEC & Cypress chipsets are hard to find these days in newer models. Genesis Logic, Initio, Ali, Myson are probably what you'll be getting.
Btw who said Powmax products are first rate? They make poor power supplies and cheap flimsy cases.

On Western Digital drives no jumper is usually "Master with no slave" setting. The label on the hard drive usually has the jumper settings.

it would be nice if you add shipping charges for each item. Since the rebates are risky, plus the shipping charge. I will think about it.
For the 2.5" enclosure, iRock or Ultra? Which on is better? I took a look at the iRock 2.5" one and see the AC adapter plug-in, what's that for? I thought 2.5" one uses power from its usb cable, no need externa power source. Am I right?

Apparently this one uses external power. Some 2.5" drives have a double USB connector on one end to ensure enough power. This one may need an extra boost.

I personally just had a great experience with an Ultra rebate. I sent in the rebate form less than a month ago and already got the $65.00 check this week. So they are gold in my experience.
too late. I need 2 enclosure for my 2 HDD sitting outside right now.

I know this is off topic but I need help in erasing HDs.
I downloaded a few softwares to securely erase HDs (collected from my friends' computers). But all the SW I downloaded required me to create a boot disk to boot into DOS to erase the HD (I guess it would be the primary/internal HD of the system I was using). I do NOT want to erase the internal HD. I only want to mount the spare HDs in external enclosure and erase them with out touching my internal HD. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Manufacturer's Link Thanks Elric428. I think it should be OK with just one usb port, however, in some cases, if not enough, the second usb port is needed, and for this product, because it has only usb port, it includes the external AC plugin as a booster.

It all depends on how your hard disk is attached to the PC. If the hard disk is the second drive (not the boot disk or C: drive), then you should be able to erase and reformat the HD by running whatever problem you have.

Yeah, that's a bit better than just OK. Plus, since this one is from Fry's, you have little to worry about, as they do back up the rebates they offer. Any problems, complain to Fry's, and they will move things along for you.
BTW, if you have a local Fry's, you can probably find this in-store and save on shipping costs.
I got a Morning Star enclosure back in the spring, the power supply promptly died (POS) after a few months (very very light usage; the LED on the PSU brick doesn't light up and it doesn't power the enclosure).
Is there anywhere I can get another? Or is it not worth it.
Is it (not) recommended to use the power supply from another I got around the same time? (Eagle Consus)
