Actually the "AC adapter" connects the enclosure to a second USB port, not your wall outlet:

They just use an AC adapter-style plug to emphasize that it's for power and not signal.

niluso said:I know this is off topic but I need help in erasing HDs.

I downloaded a few softwares to securely erase HDs (collected from my friends' computers). But all the SW I downloaded required me to create a boot disk to boot into DOS to erase the HD (I guess it would be the primary/internal HD of the system I was using). I do NOT want to erase the internal HD. I only want to mount the spare HDs in external enclosure and erase them with out touching my internal HD. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I interpret this "we're not a real business."

Powmax rebate sucks. I bought a 2.5 enclosure EMVOTB35 back in April. Not heard anything from them yet. I sent a inquiry mail to:rebate109@gmail.com. Here was the response few days later:

Dear Customer,

Where did you purchase the product EMVOTB35.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards,

REBATE 109

I replied with scanned receipt and rebate form. It's been a week, no response!

Eraser

Thanks for the info. I'll try the software later to see if it can erase external enclosure drives.

thanks. I am planning to buy 2.5" ultra. I also need a 5.25" enclosure for DVD/CD burner. Not seeing any deal on that or which one is better out of several brands in the market.

Uh.... I meant erasing by overwriting the HD with specific patterns to make all data recovery impossible. Erasing my simply "deleting file", "deleting partition", "reformat HD", "re-partition", etc... only remove the file table (or pointer to file). The actual data in the file itself still sits on the HD.

I haven't heard of Windows having the "secure" data deletion built in.

Western Digital do have some HDD tools that can write zero to the HDD. Maybe U can try that if you concern about security. But I think the best way is still get a hammer and smash it to bits. LOL

This is a great post, OP. thanks.

As for POWmax, XPCgear shipping for one encl 3.5" to Virginia was $10.24---- so that combined with a less than stellar rebate rep by a previous poster or two, but with a good, solid product--I pass on this deal. Hope the other guys restock soon. Thanks again OP.

Thanks for the laugh, I needed that. For anyone that's been around the computer industry for a while, you can see why I'm laughing.

Most of those tools will only work on HDs that are mounted internally, not HDs mounted in an external USB enclosure.
I would remove the HDs from the enclosure, wipe, format, and then re-install into the enclosure.

The Eagle Consus T-Series is absolutely gorgeous.

Any reason you can't buy both Powmax enclosures to save on shipping?

I looked at the rebates and they are different items with different skus and different file names for the rebate PDF file, so it seems like that should be fine, but wouldn't want to lose $20 on a technicality.

This of course assumes that you are willing to take the risk on the Powmax rebates.

Coolmax for FREE after rebate and FREE shipping from ZZF is OOS TOO.

All of these offers are for "laptop sized" drives arent they?

Any deals on the desktop size (5 1/2") hardrive enclosures?

The 3.5 inch enclosures are for desktop size drives.

1. No such thing as 5.5" hard drive enclosures.
2. 5.25" enclosures are big enough, and usually used, for optical drives.

This is a fantastic thread. Here's hoping it stays updated ad infinitum. Green.
