BBB Rating for companies:

Coolmax - F

Powmax - F

Eaglebit - BB

I went ahead and ordered the EagleBit one, it looks better than the others and the rebate is less risky.

Do any of these drives spin down after inactivity or system shutdown?

No, at this low price, no company is going to buy a chipset with that feature to install. Most enclosures with auto on/off power saving feature are those sold with HD included under a brand name like the WD MyBook or Buffalo.

Just received the Ultra ULT-31738 2.5" hard drive enclosure. According to the package, it should include a carrying case and a USB AT2 IDE Driver on CD-Rom, but they are both missing.

will any of these support the 500gb $90 outpost deal?

Drive added. Thanks. Rebate shows a picture of a different drive. The EMVOTB25 is supposedly a Powmax drive, yet the rebate says Diablotek.

These are ones I could find info for:

Eagle Consus T-Series ET-CSTU2-BK: supports up to 750GB text
POWMAX Moving Star EMVOTB35DSL: supports up to 400GB text
POWMAX Moving Star EMVOTB35DBK: supports up to 400GB text

Note: All of them have an IDE interface, and will not work with SATA drives.

Out of curiosity why would anyone want a 2.5" external enclosure (unless you have an extra 2.5" drive laying around) aren't the hard drives (notebook) that fit into these things a fortune?

2.5" external enclosures can be powered by just the laptops USB ports. No need for external power. Very handy when traveling and away from an external power source. Also these drives are small enough to fit in your pocket which makes them very convenient.

What if you have a laptop drive that won't boot and you want to try grabbing some of the files off via your desktop? Thats why I want one.

women love the 2.5 enclosures, they dont like the 3.5 ones, too bulky. Its definitely better for traveling.

Showing as backordered for me

I ordered the Eagle Consus T-Series ET-CSTU2-BK 3.5" USB2.0 to IDE External Enclosure - Retail. The manual says to remove one screw (not the four near the corners) from the base stand and pull it apart. It's not coming apart easily. Should I pull it off with force? Remove the other screws? Or something else?

The drive itself should still spin down.

My Adaptec enclosure does do so on a Mac connected via FireWire; but for some reason it doesn't spin down when connected to a Windows PC via USB 2. There's probably a setting somewhere that I'm missing.

I have the Coolmax enclosure (was FAR on zipzoomfly), and it doesn't specify a drive size.

Right now, I have a Seagate 500 GB PATA drive in there, and it's just fine.

The drive limit is just a text filler to sell the product.

The answer is within your reply already. The key here is firewire vs. usb. Modern OS often has power management features that can talk to HD via S.M.A.R.T commands but when connected by USB these are lost or not translated. The enclosure's chipset has to do this talking itself. The older Maxtor OneTouch II series also has this feature but it looks like with the series III, they took that out to save cost. So far I like the MyBook most. They say you can adjust spin down/time out time but I haven't tried it.

Again, don't expect easy quick rebates with these companies except the Ultra. You'll have to fight for it.
