I guess a better analogy is, my friends and I swap funny flash videos all the time, and they are extremely entertaining (classic) but the novelty of each one wears off really fast and I would be pissed if there were ONLY silly flash videos with no real hollywood movies.

I don't think the Wii is limited to novelty, short games. As for an example, if I want "real hollywood movies" I have my PC and a willingness and ability to upgrade it to keep up with all the eye candy type games that come out for the PC. If I were to buy a Wii it would be for something that is different and fun, not necessarily something that outshines what my PC can do. That's my take anyway. Even at 500 dollars, I still find myself more interested in upgrading/building a PC than going for the console. I, like many, don't have a HDTV yet (and not likely to get one anytime soon since i spend more time gaming than watching tv), so i don't care about that. For 250+ to play some fun, visibly appealing (but not spectacular) games.. maybe so. We'll see. There are some games coming to the Wii I am waiting to hear more about.

Even if the Wii encouraged more innovation and less expensive in games, the Xbox and Playstation system(s) compete with PC games too not just the Wii.

PS. One of the things I have always liked about Playstation is that the older systems have continued support for awhile after the newer system is released. Last I checked, Gamecube and Xbox game releases were pretty limited this year... primarily ports, while the PS2 still has some steam left in it.

The PS2 doesn't just have steam it's selling more than the 360 and PS3

Like I said, I don't own a Wii so I can't comment on it objectively, but from what I've read, Wii Sports and such are very much like Eye Toy games. I tried going the PC route during the PS2 days and it didn't work out. A lot of really good games don't get ported to PC (what is available is generally RTS and FPS). Also, right now, $500 probably can't build a system competitive with the 360/PS3 in terms of processing power (you'd need a very high end video card, CPU, soundcard, a really good power supply and solid cooling system). I figure rather than keeping my own computer up to date and spending a lot of money on upgrades like I've been doing recently (mostly keeping up with the GPU upgrades) I might as well use my work laptop, which has more than enough power to play RTSes like C&C3 (but not newer FPSes) and count on the PS3 for the rest. I actually don't have an HDTV either anymore. I've been looking at the 42" 1080p sets, looks like there are some pretty good deals recently. If I'm lucky the timing will work out for all of this and everything will be on sale around the same time (yeah right )

Why would you buy 3 unless they are gifts? This price drop will stay for sometime.

Conclusion? We'll be getting worse looking games (for instance Katamari going to Wii from PS3) and lower quality. It'd be like not getting any more big Blockbuster movies and only small budget films that make a lot of money ... sad

Yes, poor big budget movies that seem to spend too much movie in special effects instead of paying writers more to write movies that have actual stories. Pity those movie houses! I say bring on the small budget movies.

Sorry OP for the off topic. But great deal for those interested in PS3!

rbraden said:IMO this isn't a hot deal. No one needs this today and since it'll be $499 everywhere VERY soon, I'd wait until a coupon of some sort will take more (maybe 10%) off.I get Target B&M cpns all the time. I have a 10% off one that I haven't used, good for all purchases on one day (thogh in my experience, it's good for several days.) Even still, that's only $50 off and $450 + tax is STILL too much to pay for the PS3. I won't even consider it until the price goes south of $250.

some people are like that.

I have a friend that said he would always get console A at some price. Well, when that price came he said he'd wait for the next drop. Then a new console would come out, and he would wait for that one to drop in price... his still waiting

You cannot compare the Wii to the PS3

No apples to apples there

The reason that the Wii is selling and the PS3 is tanking has nothign to do with games, and much to do with money. I am a father of three children, who all enjoy gaming, I enjoy gaming. However I can't justify spending $600 on a gaming console, even at $500 it isn't even on my radar as far as things I might purchase. The Wii on the otherhand is very affordable, at $250 it was almost an impulse purchase. I love it, the kids love it, while the novelty does wear off a bit, it is a good platform.

Back when the PS2 and Xbox first came out they were expensive ($300 if I recall correctly), but they were both capable of playing DVD, and at the time a DVD player was selling for $200-300, so there was a good value there. With the PS3 at $500 even with its Blu-Ray capability, it just isn't much of a bargain, I am not that interested in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, and from what I have seen neither are most people, lot like they went crazy for DVD several years ago.

When it comes to image quality, I do have and enjoy an HDTV set at home, but I am not that worried about having great graphics compared to great game play, I would rather pay less for a fun game.

When the PS3 get to around $300-350 I may look into one, same with the 360 (although I imagine I will see the 360 there first). I have been predicting the demise of Nintendo in the console arena for years, the N64 was no competition to the PS, the cube was great, but just didn't do it for most folks compared to the PS2, but now I think Sony has started believing thier own propaganda, thier biggest mistake is the same mistake that killed the 3DO, it was a great machine, but other than a few harcore bleeding edge types nobody was willing to shell out that much money no matter how great the games were.

I have a Wii, Xbox 360, and Xbox. For ppl who say the Wii is super awesome and the next best thing, they just haven't played it enough. Once the novelty wears off, usage drops off dramatically. I've used my Wii maybe 1x in the last 2 months. When I first got it, I was playing it every night. Overall, I'd say I played my Xbox and the X360 more than the Wii.

It annoys me when some idiot comes along claiming that all other consoles suck except the one they own. Every console has its place. The PS3 will come into its own given some time. In addition, with Blu-ray kicking HD-DVD's @$$, I'm even more inclined to get a PS3 although I already have the HD-DVD add-on for my 360.

the ps3 is an impressively interesting and powerful machine; that being said i still (and even more so now) have concerns that MS is simply putting too much strength and blowing too much money towards killing the ps3; biting up their exclusives, offering extra content etc. it won't kill sony, but i really believe it has already crippled them this round; MS has been throwing a lot of money around, and it seems clear they really have it out for old sony

And yet you read posts about price drops for the PS3. Are you a troll or just a loser who is used to getting
his arse kicked?

God forbid. Last time I gamed, "visuals" were secondary to "fun" and the video game industry was here to make money.

i dunno about you, but i'd say that the wii really doesn't have all that many fun games; it does however have a very high gimick/gizmo factor

jmr2198 said:If I were in the market to buy a PS3, in my opinion for games it is a waste since there are no system seller games yet, what I would do is wait till a couple days before it is rumored to officially be a price drop and buy it at a best buy or Circuit City. Then after they all start advertising that it is 499, and the store circulators are totally floating around take the competitor's ad back to best buy or Circuit City and ask for your 110% price match, they have to give you back 100 bucks plus 10% of the difference in price so you save an extra 10 bucks. so you really get the PS3 for 489 plus tax.

the funny thing with this common FW logic is that now you've bought a PS3 later, had less time to enjoy it, and saved a whopping ten bucks? regardless of having a "fantastic" game (and if you haven't played ninjas gaiden, even though it's old, it's fantastic), this logic is pretty lame

btw: i have a 360 and i gotta say that the quietness and higher reliability of the ps3 is enticing; bluray, the cell processor, lots of interesting "things", it just has to be all pulled together with a great game or two, and more useful features; i'm putting my money on the ideal ps3-buy time to be at $300, in another year or year and a half.
