From the looks of things (specs/features) it looks to compare very well. Sound can be another thing of course! But they are definitely competitors of one another. One feature the Onkyo system has, that I don't see here, is the system EQ function.

I saw shipping is 50 bucks flat for all of them, and price of the system is 85-90 range. However, eBay means no extended warranty/ no Yamaha warranty/ no CC rewards and no returns.

CC rewards? is that a reason not to buy on eBay?

comment if i'm being too harsh, but passive subwoofers kinda suck. and i think you'd regret buying one.
Yup. They sucks. But you're not gonna find anything with a nice active sub for anything close to this price range...
Passive vs active doesn't make much difference if the amp is good enough. The major difference between the 2 is the convenience of not having to have a receiver with a built in powered sub channel to power it. Most of the sonic difference is just that passive subwoofers are packaged with lower quality budget receivers while powered ones tend to be packaged with better receivers. You might gain a little cleanness by not having the powered wiring but it's not a huge difference.

Ditto on the comments above. After all, this really isn't a totally passive subwoofer - it's just that the amp is in the receiver to save costs.
BTW MAJOR heads-up, this system is $169 in the local ad today. I am not sure of RS's policy on on-line/B&M price matching, but you might have to do a free-to-store ship order for the $149 price.

Most active subs have a separate crossover, allowing you to tweak the overlapping frequencies so you have smooth bass instead of boomy. at this price point, passive would be a good deal. Personally, I prefer active components, even in my bass guitars. More balls.
Keep in mind that this system has a crossover. Granted, there isn't the luxury of dual crossovers, but HT setup normally has a single crossover point anyway. I think somewhere along the line, someone thinks the subwoofer here is of the older passive type that simply wires in series with the main speakers - such as "sub/sat" systems like the old Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble systems, or the dreaded Bose AM3/5 systems.
Let's have a simple lesson in cheap HTIB 101 - chapter: subwoofers
On a decent home theater system, the system electronics (receiver or preamp) has a crossover - typicaly 80Hz low pass as a default - for the subwoofer output. The subwoofer then in turn, with it's own amplifier, uses that crossover point. Life is wonderful unless you live in an apartment... and your least is broken.
On a lower-end component based HTIB, the electronics of the system, usually a variant of a regular line home theater receiver, has a crossover - typically 80Hz low pass as default. To save cost, keeping in mind the lower ultimate output of the system due to satellite speaker capability, the amplifier is placed INSIDE the receiver as another output channel.
The similarities of the two concepts: Both have crossovers, often adjustable in frequency, adjustable in level, and the driver is feed via dedicated amplification.
The differences: The HTIB has the subwoofer connected via speaker wire instead of coaxial cable since the amplifier is located in the receiver. The other difference is.... (sound of crickets chirping) gee, have to think about that one.

They have changed the web page a bit, but it's still there - just hidden.
First use the check your local store for stock link. At that point, local store stock will show up - and "ship to store" will show up.
But be careful upon pickup. If the store has open stock of this system, they might try to pass it on to you. Happened to me twice now, and I don't shop there much. Had an Epson printer be "sealed in the box", with ink already installed. Also had them order a digital camera vs. take the display as it was a gift. The one they "got in just for me" was the display.

Has anybody gotten this shipped to the store? Reading through the website it says there should be a Ship to Store icon next to the product. I'm not finding one and haven't found any hidden way to do it. I'd pull the trigger on this for the online price but not for the $169 price in the weekly ad. It would be $6 cheaper to have it shipped to my house!

When you check on local store availibility, do this... enter 46804 as your zip (my zip code). You'll see 4 stores come up with that. Now do the same for your zip. It is possible that there is no stock and none of the stores in your area have that function.

I've done that. I have numerous stores that have ship to store... the Radio Shack website says there are some products that are not eligible for ship to store and I think this is one of them.
Well, look at it like this - there are 2 companies in particular that can't get an order right if it was written on the palm of their hand. One is Radio Shack, the other is Sears. And they both wonder why their future looks dim.
Trooooo story, Sears (of all places) had a decent deal on the Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS, and nobody else had a decent sale on a respectable but budget end model that week. Ordered it for store pickup, That Sunday, it was advertized at the price I paid... but I was still waiting. Finally I went in and bought one in their electronics department that afternoon. That was 2 weeks ago.
Today I get an automated call that my GPS is in and ready for pickup. DUH!
The manager at the local RS store is a "lifer", which mean in reality, he needs to get a life. Anywhoo, years ago when the LX5 speaker was hot, I went in to listen to pair at a store he managed. They were clearly out of phase. Obvious to a deaf person, uh, well, you get the idea. So I reverse 1 speaker and listen to them in phase. The guy all but poops his pants! He inists they were wired right, and was following the little silver stripe on the wire while I tip toed out the door. I thought "Use your ears, you idiot!".
Maybe a decent store will have a similar sale. Or go to the local store and ask if they can get one in. OR, since they isn't a super-secret price goof, you could always call RS to place an order and see what happens.
was able to stop in rs today to pick up the unit. cannot wait to hook it up tonight. it was an open box unit and the mgr gave me 6mnts ext warranty for it.
Picked up the last one at my local shop (along with the last 9.97 tool set). It was the display (I asked for 10% off - denied) so they gave me the 'premium' warranty for free which doubles the manufacturers warranty.
