coolpizza said:How does this compare to Onkyo HTS-590?
From the looks of things (specs/features) it looks to compare very well. Sound can be another thing of course! But they are definitely competitors of one another. One feature the Onkyo system has, that I don't see here, is the system EQ function.

I saw shipping is 50 bucks flat for all of them, and price of the system is 85-90 range. However, eBay means no extended warranty/ no Yamaha warranty/ no CC rewards and no returns.

CC rewards? is that a reason not to buy on eBay?

comment if i'm being too harsh, but passive subwoofers kinda suck. and i think you'd regret buying one.
Yup. They sucks. But you're not gonna find anything with a nice active sub for anything close to this price range...
Passive vs active doesn't make much difference if the amp is good enough. The major difference between the 2 is the convenience of not having to have a receiver with a built in powered sub channel to power it. Most of the sonic difference is just that passive subwoofers are packaged with lower quality budget receivers while powered ones tend to be packaged with better receivers. You might gain a little cleanness by not having the powered wiring but it's not a huge difference.
