If anyone is interested its a WD SATA Scorpio drive in there. I popped it open and did a drive swap with the Macbook so now i have the old 80GB velcro'd to the lid in the passport case. (I tried this too with the 160GB Passport but it vibrated a lot. The 250GB is really quiet)

the 120 gb was 90 last week at Staples. 250 for 160 is good if you have the extra cash lying around..

Are the Passport drives bootable?

TIA

can you tell me what the spec is for the sata hard drive? is it only 2meg cache as stated in the spec, or 8meg?

thanks

How is it working out for you? I plan to swap this drive with the 120gb one in my Macbook pro. Do you know if this drive is compatible with my MBP by any chance? How did you pop it open? I couldnt open the enclosure of my 160gb wd passport.

Circuit City has this drive for $169.99. There is also a mention of $15 off $100 at CC for study break. I went to CC today and found a whole bunch of these coupons. They are one time use and unique and dated from 8/8/7 - 8/27/7. If you buy this online, through fatwallet, you could save an extra 2%. Do instore pickup and have your drive right away as opposed to waiting. So total is $169.99 - $15 = 154.99 + tax. Also 2% off of 154.99.

No go on the coupon. Didn't see that they mentioned $15 off $100 on REGULARLY priced item. Oh well, maybe someone could use it at a competitor's store like Staples.

Ordered this drive for $144.58 + Tax via the PayPal link. This is a great price for this drive, and shipping is free!!!

I've been watching this drive and I have a 10% off Dell EA coupon from Dell. However, it's from SBS and, even though sbs allows you to checkout with paypal, the 10% do not apply over there so I can't stack.

Oh well, got the drive from Dell Home with 3% FC + 10% paypal coupon. This deal went from good to great with the paypal coupon.

$57.8 cents per gig. Not bad for a portable drive. The deal from OD is better (if you could use the coupon) but it's 160GB vs 250GB and that Maxtor drive isn't as good or nice as this WD drive.

in 4 1. the 10% off through PayPal sealed it for me.

got the 160gb one from Costco for $97 (after tax) last week, but couldn't resist the 250gb...gonna return the 160gb. these WD Passports are really slick...and the Passport II's are smaller than the silver 100gb version i picked up last year.

thanks op!

Yes as long as your bios permit booting from a USB drive.

This drive is only 4200RPM with 2MB buffer. The CNet review says its read speed is OK, but the write speed is 20min for 10G mixed file, but Seagate only takes a little more than 10 mins.

maserati125,

So you are saying this is a 4200 rpm drive, even though Dell says it's 5400 rpm? Can you send me links to where you got your specs? Thanks.

maserati125 is wrong, this is a 5400RPM drive. There is only one 250GB 2.5" drive in existence, and it's this one. Cnet.com.au shows it to be much faster than its nearest rival, the Seagate FreeAgent Go 160GB.

Got my drive last night. Works great!!! A sweet deal!

Got mine. It's an 8mb cache/buffer drive.

How can you tell the difference between a 2mb and 8mb cache? Does anyone know if the sku will tell?

I used a program called HDTune to find out. I imagine WD puts whatever drive is handy into the case.
