Amazon is even cheaper at $109.99 AR (ya gotta click for the price).

However, DTMF tones from the phones don't work well, according to reviews. You need to press the button, wait for an audible click, then press another. Huge problem for me in this day and age where DTMF is used for everything. And if your call is going thru Global Crossing, they don't work at all. (Tones work perfectly from PC/Mac-based Skype.)

Other reported issues: Caller ID also does not diplay correctly if you have POTS lines according to 1 review, poor battery life, muddy sound.

Linksys has more reviews, and better ones overall.

The CIT400 is a standalone as long as you have broadband... no PC required. You may be thinking about the CIT200, which requires a computer (and those are not Vista savvy, according to Amazonian reviews).

For some strange reason, Linksys does not make spare handsets. However, one Amazonian comment sez the Netgear SPH150D handset works fine with a set-up trick: "Press and hold down the page button on the Linksys base station. While holding down the page button, press the register button on the Netgear handset. In a matter of seconds, the handset identified itself as Skype(2)."

Radio Shack has had their D-Link Skype adapter DPH-50U on clearance for $19.99 for a while. YMMV.

what i meant was that in the long run the CIT400 is cheaper because it doesnt need a PC.

Does the Linksys have additional handsets?

One minor problem - SOMETIMES the phone call itself is not crystal clear but more often than not it's good to go.

How is it different from downloading the Skype smartphone application on to my phone?
Thanks in advance.

Many qiuestions to ask.. Here are few

a) Does Skye provided a US# where I can recive incomming calls and make outgoing calls
b) How is the Sound quality compares to Skype soft phone(Messanger). Last time, I remebered when I joined a conf call, It brought hail amount of echo. The Conf mod found the issue with my phone and thrown me out from the call.
c) can i dial # on the cordless phone if I use this device(USB--> Skype Adapter--> Wall Jack --> Cordless Phone).
d) Any issue in call drops etc.

Since SunRocket Died, I have siged up with Buch of Numbers Voice Sticks (two #), Vonnage Circuit City deal(1#). I have two cell phones too. Very confused what to do.

Got a few questions. I'm an intl flight attendant thus intl calling would be amazing. I have used Skype for computer to computer calls or someone in U.S. uses it to call my hotel. I have no home phone, thus I think making this device no good for me. But I read a response in here about a Treo 650 being used (I own). My service is through Verizon though, and thus I don't get service intl. Most flight attendants buy sim cards but Verizon phones don't have them. Does anyone know how I could make this work for me preferably on my cell phones. Thanks a bunch I'm not so good on the tech stuff!

Your Verizon phone is completely different technology than used in most parts of the world. Ditch the Verizon plan at your first chance, and go with a GSM provider (T-Mobile, AT&T) and make sure you get a tri-band or quad-band "world phone." The freebies they offer are only for North America. Or, keep your Verizon service for here, and buy an unlockable GSM phone for use overseas. You might want to buy an unlocked one on your next trip without any service plan, such a phone used with prepaid SIM cards there (again, get a tri or quad band).

OR, you'll have to buy a Verizon GSM/CDMA combo "global" phone: link. But these will likely not be unlockable, so foreign SIMs will not work... you'll be tied to their ridiculously high international rates.

Once you get a phone that works overseas, you can forward your calls to any wireless phone.
Skype application: Tools (or Preferences on a Mac) -> Call Forwarding -> your mobile number. But you need SkypeOut credits to do so. And you'll still burn wireless minutes.

There are probably other more expensive, or really geeky, solutions out there. But, this is the easiest and cheapest.

The US cellular companies are the ones making this so difficult; they're simply dictators in control of their networks, allowing nobody else in.

You could just get a wifi handset for Skype (that doesn't require a computer). These will work (ring, make outgoing calls) wherever there is wifi internet....I don't know how feasible this is...but it would be easier than this adapter, which requires a computer.

If you're going to carry a laptop, you can also get a Skype compatible bluetooth headset and use that as the headset for Skype...that's kind of a hassle though..

You can accomplish much of the same thing by using a free service-- www.mobivox.com. It doesn't require your computer to be turned on, and you can use it for free from any telephone line in something like 30 countries. My wife and I used to purchase SkypeIn every year for her friends in Poland so she could call them from the US PSTN. Since they almost doubled the price for it, I found this free service and it works great, plus she can call all of her Skype buddies for free instead of purchasing a SkypeIn account for each one.

I highly recommend it.

Are there any other charges once you get the device? Skype is free on the internet, so why are they advertising 500 minutes free?

Got this device and downloaded both the Skypemate and Googlemate drivers. Are they not supposed to coexist and work together? If the Googlemate is enabled, Skypemate says "can't find usb phone" and vice versa. Can this conflict be resolved through configuraton?OP please advised.

Certainly it will be *MUCH* faster than posting here and waiting for an answer to an 'obvious' question...
