Aren't the Polk R50's for $69 at frys.com a better deal? http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=755150&highlight_key=y&keyword1=r50 MSRP according to polk.com for the r50's is $640 a pair, vs. $575 each for the woot speakers, but it seems like 2 6.5" drivers would be better than 2 4.5" drivers... http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/rm7400t/ http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/r50/ Works out to be about $180 for the R50's when you include shipping, so still a lot cheaper than the rm7400t's, but it seems to me like the r50's are better speakers. |

No, the R50's are on the absolute bottom of Polk's line. They are basic models that are sold at Circuit City while the Rm7400T/Rm40T's are generally sold at high-end store such as Tweeter. |

I second the paradigm recommendation. Spent a lot of time comparing Polk and Paradigm and can definately say that Paradigm gets you clearer highs with the same mids and bass than Polks do, for relatively same or less cost. joekuta said:89dB efficiency is typical for a loudspeaker, but i don't see how 3 chinese drivers/channel could cost $300.
I would rather splurge on an audiophile-only brand (axiom, paradigm, etc) than trust Polk. Which is, infact, what I decided to do for my home theater.

you should mention specific models rather than speaker companies in general. different model speakers from the same speaker company will sound WAY different. Paradigm is head and shoulders better than Polk. |

not to thread-trashing, but don't be fooled by Polk's MSRP. The spec does not look appealing for a pair of floor-standing, though it may have good WAF. I think most $200 speakers on your local craigslist would sound better than this. |

Just letting you lot know,_read_some_reviews_, before basing performance on price. i agree, polk is nothing more than a "premium" big box (Mass merchant) store product. invest in your speakers. nothing will have a greater impact on your sound quality than decent speakers. beware: once you get the "nice speaker" bug, its' an expensive and time consuming endeavor. also, speaker technology has not really progressed in many years. consider finding a nice pair of "Slightly used" high end speakers rather than a "New" mass merchant product. they will likely sound better and last longer than these polks.
as others have mentioned. paradigm is just one of many speaker brands that will easily out perform polk. english designed speakers are well noted be being acoustically tracnsparent. check out KEF, B&W and Monitor Audio. also check out PSB for a more reasonably priced line of speakers. |

Any one would care to post comparable deal in Paradigms. I think in FW sense we compare dollars and very rearely material or items when the tolerance is very narrow. I like good speakers and have Nuance (may some laugh) floor standing which made me move in this direction. |

Hmmm - are you saying Paradigm, etc DON'T use any chinese parts? Amazing what people will fall for. joekuta said:89dB efficiency is typical for a loudspeaker, but i don't see how 3 chinese drivers/channel could cost $300.

Probably not canada subsidizes the speaker industry - one reason they are so good we could check them for lead sbirdsc said:Hmmm - are you saying Paradigm, etc DON'T use any chinese parts? Amazing what people will fall for.

Fauntleroy said:The only people who buy Polk speakers are frat boys and audiophile wannabes. I mean, really--this is a Circuit City "premium" brand. What else do you need to know? You won't find these at Circuit City. they sell Polk's lower end, which is Circuit City's higher end. |
