Last price I've seen was $39.90 and still to much for me. Homedics is still $39.50 as of a few days ago. Should be due for a drop soon.

Not so sure about that, it stayed at $69.50 almost forever before it went to $39.50.

Yes, in my opinion. I bought an APC 1500VA LCD UPS from a Best Buy clearance about 2 years ago for $40. I tend to get the 550VA ones now when they're on sale for $30 because I've learned from recent experience with APC UPSes that their batteries do not last very long. I have yet to have a single unit bought new in the last 3 years make it beyond 2 years without the battery dying and some bit the dust in 1 year. The warranty is supposed to be 3 years, so I'm saving up several UPSes to replace, but if they still want the whole unit shipped back it could cost me about $15 in shipping per unit. That's about half the cost of a brand new 550VA.

I recently found a 600VA for $30 at Sam's Club, noticed the box date was early 2008, so I only bought 1, tried the battery, and as suspected while it worked it could barely provide 100W for 5 minutes before going to empty. Too bad battery replacements and shipping are so expensive, so I figure my new strategy is to buy a new $30 550VA that haven't been sitting on the shelf for years (some stores have ancient UPSes on their shelves so watch out) and it'll probably last 2 years. It's not worth investing in more expensive UPSes since they don't last long. These are just my opinions from my experiences.

it's too bad the companies couldn't just market the UPS's and batteries as separate items in retail stores. IT would give an accessible placefor people to buy replacement batteries and prevent buying an old UPs with a dead battery. The problem is that as simple as hooking 2 terminal of a battery to wires are (and I'm sure APC could make it even simpler to access the battery compartment) , most consumers still wouldn't do it....

Then again this also would put a spotlight on the ridiculous prices some manufacturers charge for their own batteries compared to 3rd party batteries.
