I just bought this camera from BB after they gave me 12% off. This is cheaper and includes a 2GB card. BB sux! I am going to get my difference from them today.
I don't see it is a hot deal as pricegrabber has it for $515.98 shipped, no tax for most states.
Personally, I would like to pay a premium up to $50 to buy from Costco. You have 90 days to return it without incurring any restocking fee. Many cameras have some hot/dead pixels. It is not considered defect by Nikon. However, it is better to have as few as possible.
Costco also extends your warranty for an additional year
Edit: Sam's club will extend your warranty by 3 years (for a total of 4 years) for $39.85, add'l 1 year for $14.39. Add another year free to each of those for Sam's Club Plus members.
I bought this camera last month from an online retailer for 515.00 which included a 1gb sd card, no tax, no shipping.
Anyways, I'm very happy with it and it takes great pics. I think anyone that buys this will be happy with it.

I agree..there are many places online like buydig.com etc and AbesOfMaine.com, which are reputed. I recently bought an olympus E-510 with two lens combo for $849 shipped..no tax. It is better to buy at these places, who are also authorized dealers than to pay shipping and tax for buying at Costco. 2GB SD Card is no big deal, when there are 4 gb SDHC cards out there in the market.

AT Buydig.com, D40 retails for $509.00 with Free shipping, NO tax (except for NJ) and free 1gb sd card.

i don't get your logic. a 2 gb card is not a big deal because? because it's not the biggest card? so? there are bigger cards than your 4 gb sdhc. in fact, they go up way higher. there's an 8 gb. so now, if someone were to give you a 4 gb sdhc, would you not want it because it's not the largest?

It is not the question of largest card...am just trying to say that at costco the price to CA shipped would be approx $571 with tax with a 2gb sd card. Whereas at Buydig.com, with 1gb sd card , the price happens to be $509. So, see the difference for yourself. If i were to buy at costco, i would have to pay $62 extra just for the difference of 1gb sd. You can use that $62 difference to buy a 4gb SDHC card. I am not sure, if D40 supports 8 gig, but if it does, you can even go for that So, the logic is simple.....

Ultimately, it is the end difference in price and warranty which matters....so, if i were to buy this camera, i would definitely recommend not to buy at costco....
Staples has this camera for $549.98 and Abe's of Maine has it for $499.99. So, if you PM this at Staples and use $30 off $225 coupon the price should be aboout $465 + tax at Staples.

I agree that 6.1M is Ok, but why pay $500+ for CCD instead of CMOS (Canon XT)? Is this CCD as good as CMOS? What I'm missing?
tnx
6 MP and CCD sensors are *good* things.
First of all, this is Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, it's not a point and shoot camera. D40 has a huge CCD sensor made by Sony, meaning you get *lower noise* in your pictures. It is well known among people in the industry that Sony made 6 megapixel DSLR sensors have the lowest noise in the market, especially compared to 10 megapixel sensor cameras. For proof, set the Nikon D40 to ISO 1600 and try taking night time shots. The results will amaze you. A 10 MP sensor may not always have the cleanest pictures, for now (with today's DSLR cameras) but it is believed that future camera sensors of higher megapixel values will have improved picture quality with lower noise
Secondly, as someone pointed out, CMOS and CCD sensors are two different standards, each with their pros and cons. Wikipedia is good at explaining the differences. Nikon and Canon are rivals, they adopted different standards.......it's like a Pepsi vs Coke comparison. (I would say Nikon is more like Pepsi by the way, the underdog who makes superior products who may not be as large as its competition) Currently, the better CMOS sensors are in $3000+ cameras, not in Canon Rebel line. The technology is constantly being improved, but more in the expensive models, not cheaper consumer models. Bottom line, one isn't better than the other.
I think the price on this camera is starting to dropping due to the d40x. which is the exact same camera except that its 10mp.
Nikon wanted to release a dslr for the beginner/point and shoot group, but the average consumer gets confused thinking that more megapixels is better. so they probably didn't sell alot of the d40 because its "only" 6.1 mp. so they release the d40x. I bet they start fading out the d40. imo I the d40 takes better pics over the d40x due to the reduction in noise. the d40x sensor is the same size as the one found on the d40.
Its funny, because the canon xt dslr is an 8mp camera, and the nikon d40 takes just as good, if not better pics. Again, confusion and good marketing telling people they need more mega pixels so they'll spend more money i guess.
oh well...just my take on it I guess.

Hello. Please provide a link to the $30 off coupon for Staples. I was in the store today, and they said that they would match the Costco price of $499.99, but that they had no coupons. Please advise. Thank you for your information.

A huge part of the story is the lens. A good sharp lens can do wonders. I have RebelXT, only 8MP, however the lenses do make a difference.

Hmmm... for most users I might even go: 1. Lenses 2. Lighting 3. Body / Automatic functionality 4. Photographer
That is why I got the 18-200VR to match my D40. The lens costs twice more than the body. Will upgrade when a deal on the D300 body falls below 1K.

I have the d40 also, great camera. If you're looking for a good lens, either go for the 18-200VR from nikon if you want telephoto with stabilization for $800. (although a fairly slow lens), or for a fast lens get the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for $370.. I chose the Sigma 30mm, it's very compact and makes a great companion to this camera. In my book fast glass always wins, and telephoto isn't used as much for most ppl. Review of D40 with Sigma 30mm For those that don't know, a faster lens gives you 2 things - it can stop action better and you can shoot in low light without a flash. So far I haven't had to use a tripod or a flash.
found costco probably is the "only" place that you can return a digital camera without restocking fee after use. I checked CC and BB, you can only return untouched DC for full refund, or exchange if there's any defective, but once opened, you need to pay 15% fee to return for reason like, I don't like it. And to me, 90 days trial will be good enough to make a decision.

Bottom line, one isn't better than the other.Sorry but I have had many various film and now digital cameras over the year NIKON is not a underdog camera company. I do own a D40 after trying a D70 and found it to have slightly better image quality mostly because it is a newer camera with better processing. If any camera company would be considered a underdog today or in the past it would be olympus who continually produces different but fine cameras.
