Ok, so I called to cancel my crappy Vonage service today and was surprised by an offer that the CSR recommended I tell my friends about.....so, Fatwallet friends, here you go.

I subscribe to the Unlimited plan and was paying $24.99. He told me he could drop that to $14.99 with two free months of service. I asked how long it was good for and he told me that it would stay at $14.99 for the life of my service with them. In addition, since I complained about the quality of the calls, he sent a free adapter out to replace the one that I've had for the last two years. Not sure if it will help the quality, but at the new price, I'll give it a shot. Once again, he told me to tell any friends that are Vonage customers about this deal so they can take advantage of the promotion as well. Hopefully he's correct about that.

Are you sure you don't have the 500 out minutes a month plan?

I have been thinking about it for a while - I am not a fan of voip service but I am willing to give it a shot. I pay $31 just for local service with caller ID (including all taxes and surcharges.

On a $14.99 plan, how much should I expect the total (including al fees) will be?...

Thanks OP

Nope, I've got the unlimited. I've lived in too many states and gathered up too many friends across this fine nation to get by on 500 minutes. Like I said, I was really surprised by the offer, and I think I forgot to mention that he was even kind enough to credit those two free months at the $24.99/mo that I had been paying. I have no idea if the new router will improve the call quality, but I'd have been a bit nuts to pass up the opportunity to try it out.

Here's the billing detail from last month:

Charges Detail:Residential Premium Unlimited Plan for (22/Aug-21/Sep) $24.99
Regulatory Recovery Fee $0.99
Emergency 911 Cost Recovery $0.99
Sales Tax $1.84
Federal Universal Service Fee $1.76
County 911 Fee $0.49
Total Amount $31.06

Here's the account detail as of today:
Rate Plan Information:
Rate Plan: $14.99 Unlimited Residential Plan-RT0807
Rate Plan Start Date: Sep 18, 2007

I have no idea if they will honor this offer for a new customer. The CSR told me to tell my friends that are current Vonage customers, so it sounds like more of a retention sort of thing, but it's certainly worth a shot if you've considered trying it out.

very nice deal at $14.99/mo

does your new plan still include the free calls to Europe that were included in the $24.99 plan?

Thanks - I just emailed customer care. Hopefully I'll get the same plan added to my account!

I moved to ViaTalk from Vonage...

Vonage's services and CS is just lacking.

Would love to hear some feedback on if it is working for other customers, and if so, what is the best way to do it.

Haven't ever tried to call Europe, but AFAIK there's only one unlimited residential plan, so I assume that's still included. The CSR specifically said that it was the same plan that I have now, just $10/mo less than I had been paying.

no go for me! I was told to provide 'myfriend's' phone number or account as a referral and for verification....

I'll have to try it. Still have my service from the Circuit City $300 gift card offer a couple months ago.

I called for the second time and talked to 2 different reps. One at sales and one at cust serv. The first one did not know anything like that - he contacted the superv. as well. When I got transferred to cs, I was asked for the friend's phone number to verify the deal because they did not have such a thing either.

I have setup two Vonage boxes are my offices in India. Saves me thousands in phone bills.

Quality is great! Never needed CSRs for anything.

nice for unlimited plan at $14.99!

Dead deal, unless the OP wants to provide his phone number for verification

Was anyone besides Godfatherofsoul able to get this deal?

Its just like the Bells now. Expect to pay ~$20 total. Its 33% tax!

I do not think that Vonage is crappy. Its working fine for me from last one year.

I'm thinking of switching to Vonage, I picked up an adapter at Wally world last night on clearance for $15. However, I'm thinking if I should wait for BF, perhaps there will be promotions to switch. Would love a giftcard.

Can you please help me in setting the boxes in INdia. My cousin in INdia is currently trying to set it up in India on BSNL. He got the internet to work with the Vonage Motorola Device RT2142 but no dial tone in the phone.

I will appreciate the help. Thanks

Vonage has charged me about $9 for changing plans in the past.
grrr

Thanks OP

Will give it a shot and report back

I had problems with the quality of my Vonage calls until I switched from a junky cordless phone to a good one (Panasonic). Now the quality is great. So check all your equipment before blaming Vonage. I'm using their standard PAP adapter with cable internet, without any special QoS routing.

Total should be around $19.

Well, I transferred my service to SunRocket from Vonage one and a half years ago because I hate those fees. But look at what happened there Now I am back to Vonage and learned not to complain those fees any more.

For question about total cost of the $14.99 plan, it's $18.43 for me (because I made international phone calls):

Residential Basic 500 Minutes Plan for 1-(603)-xxx-xxxx (19/Sep-18/Oct) $14.99
International Calls for 1-(603)-xxx-xxxx (19/Aug-18/Sep) $0.33
Regulatory Recovery Fee $0.99
Emergency 911 Cost Recovery $0.99
Federal Universal Service Fee $1.13
Total Amount $18.43

Honestly, only the Federal Universal Service Fee is a tax, about 6.5%. Without international calls, the final price would be about $18.08 (there's a tax on international calls as well).

I have had Vonage for over 4 years and I have been VERY satisfied with it. I have had it in two different homes and also in an apartment I rented for 14 months.

Last January, I took them up on their offer to pay for a full year and save something like 2 months worth of charges. Again, no problem so far. I hate the fees, but what can you do, they're on everything related to telecommunications.

Now I want to try and see if I can get in on the $14.99 deal. I still have about 4-5 months left on my prepaid year, so I'm not sure how that will work. I'll report back after I call them.

Ok, just got off the phone with another Vonage CSR and here's the latest....

You need to speak with the account management department when you call in, you can wait for the voice prompts, but she told me that the extension is 553. Once you have them on the line, and I swear to you she actually told me to say this, tell them that you are calling to cancel your service. She says that they should offer it to you at this point, but if not, go ahead and mention that part of the reason you want to cancel is that you know of people that are getting the unlimited plan for $14.99. She also mentioned that this is a "test" of a planned rollout on a larger scale in a few months, so it appears that they are thinking about changing the unlimited plan to this price down the road anyway.

I just called and the CSR said there was no such deal. However, when I told her that I know of people who have recieved the deal -- when they called to cancel their service -- she kind of politely chuckled a little and said that something like that would be handled by their Account Management Department. Basically, without coming out and saying it, she put it out there that this is something that would be done to retain a customer when the customer is calling to cancel their account.

I wasn't in the mood to deal with it at this time since, to tell you the truth, I like my Vonage service and really don't want to cancel it, and I'm a little concerned that if this is one-off and not a companywide policy, they might call my bluff and proceed with the cancellation. Realistically, I could abort that, but I want to have my pitch ready when I call them.

Green for the op. Just got converted to unlimited for 14.99 permanent rate. Followed the directions in the previous posts and worked like a champ.

Worked like a charm... thanks.

Thanks OP. Worked for me too. They initially offered me a $19.99 and then I asked for a 14.99. It is unlimited with 2 free months.

This worked for me as well after talking to account management. He did mention that it is only a 12 month promotion, but too watch your bill and it 12 months call back and renew again. Thanks OP!!! Green all around for you.

Okay it worked for me but no 2 months free were offered and the gal said its good for a year and not forever. Hopefully she just didn't see the other details.

Mine says this now.

Rate Plan: $14.99 Premium Unlimited 12 Months Step Up Plan
Rate Plan Start Date: Sep 19, 2007
Rate Plan End Date: Sep 6, 2008
Rate Plan Renewal: $24.99 Residential Premium Unlimited Plan

I just upgraded my 500 minutes for $14.99 to the Premium unlimited plan for $14.99. They also gave the two months free as well. The CSR only offered me this plan for 12 months and insisted that they could not give me the unlimited plan for $14.99 for the life of my service. I will try to call them later and try to get it for the life of my service. Thanks OP!

Thanks OP.. Worked as advertised!! 2 free months and $14.99 for a year.

As far as ooma ... how in the world do you expect that business model to survive? Eventually it will have to go down .. hope you get your moneys worth before it goes under ...

My buddy called me and let me know that you can now get Vonage talked down to like $12.15 a month unlimited. I had a partial credit for the past months payment and cried just enough to get a free month too. With my five dollar credit and their help i have no Vonage bill till 12-30-09

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SWEET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saved me 10 a month, plus a little bit more on taxes too.
