This deal goes to prove yet again that you get what you pay for, irrespective of the smoke and mirrors vendors use to lure us in. As for roasting your own, I used to roast my own using one of THESE but quickly got tired of doing it. 5oz of fresh coffee translates to much less of roasted coffee so I found myself roasting more times than I could be bothered. The roasters are loud and smelly so it can be quite an ordeal if you live in a small house or apartment. But of course that's just my opinion. |

Received mine yesterday - and yes it is an unusual blend for Lavazza - bitterness is there and, I guess, this is likely their southern Italy blend - have to experiment with grind to see if I can manipulate flavor! Will post results later. At $5/# it's a good cup of southern Italian espresso. Good luck! |

Well, I've tried this blend using the following brewing methods: Rancilio Silvia espresso machine and Rocky grinder - tasted flat with pronounced bitterness, thin body... completely unmemorable shot (I actually pulled 7 shots for a taste comparison among friends, none of them liked the blend). Arobie Aeropress (yeah, the people who make that frisbee ring) - well, this method yielded a pleasant cup of coffee. Certainly not your typical flavors in this blend, but it is at least drinkable. A bit like a richer, better tasting diner coffee. Bodum Presspot - not bad, not bad, certainly drinkable. Again, this blend is way different than the blends I typically find suitable for my tastebuds. I prefer the Aeropress over the presspot as the subtle flavors are not overwhelmed by the sediment you get from the presspot. Anyway, not a bad coffee for $5ish/pound. Would never consider it for much more than that. I don't find it good enough to drink as a shot of espresso, but it does OK using other brewing methods. |

Wow, you've assembled a tasting panel! Great comparison. Bottom line the way I see it from all the replies is that this blend is not the best for espresso, but fine for other methods. Thanks to all the contributors for great input. OM |

Fallout said: What number did you set your Rocky to get a 25 sec pull? I'm guessing it was pretty low. Well, it's not my Rocky. My buddy has a Silvia (with PID) and Rocky grinder at work that we use for our daily coffee fix. As soon as I received my order from Amazon, our coffee klatch got together to taste it. The Rocky was set to '0' for the grind. I believe that the owner of the Rocky has adjusted the burrs just short of scraping for that position. Anyway, perhaps there is room for improvement if one experiments with the grind and tamp pressure, but I really don't think that it will be enough to make this blend into something more than it is. Again, all comments on this particular blend are specific to my tastes. My current favorite espresso blend is by Blue Bottle Coffee Company - Hayes Valley Espresso, but we are talking about close to $18/pound, so it's really not fair to compare the Lavazza to this blend. Anyway, life's too short to drink bad coffee! |

I got mine yesterday and I use it from my single serve machine...I put it in the my k-cup and I make pods with it...I would say it is great coffee. Maybe some of these espresso hounds should clean their machines and learn how to do it correct.....I am am sure their replies will be...that they are masters of pulling off the espresso shot...but I doubt it....There is a reason this is the #1 brand of espresso in Italy!!!! Maybe americans don't know how to prepare it!!!! |

Maybe americans don't know how to prepare it!!!! OK, I have to chime in here... there are many people in this thread who have fairly refined tastes when it comes to coffee. Making a blanket statement that they are not using their machines correctly or need to clean them is disrespectful. Nice bit of America bashing as well, bravo, you must be proud. Also, the #1 brand of anything doesn't guarantee quality nor taste, here or in Italy. Hey, drink all the Budweiser you like, it might be the #1 brand beer in the US, but I'll stick to my favorite microbrews (as well as better blends of coffee, which this is not). |

My understanding is that one cannot use the same grind numbers btw. different Rocky's..they're all just different enough. WRT, life's too short...tell that to the LINE in front of Starbucks on Market! Funny, since there's another practically empty a block away. |

At $12.95 lb it's pretty good. http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/store/coffee/blends/blackcat I usually get Peet's Coffee because it is close by and can buy it a pound at a time without paying for shipping costs and get a Chocolate & Caramel Swirl at the same time. |

Thanks to all who posted w/ reviews! I almost cancelled my order after reading about the bitter taste. I plan to use this to replace my Starbucks french roast ( $7.xx/lb@ costco) for drip/french press, and it sounds like it will be fine. |

I am sorry if you think this coffee is bitter...I don't. I just find that everyone will slam a good deal on this site when they don't know what they are talking about.(thread crappers) Sorry if I offend anyone!!! This is simple...it is coffee at $5/lb shipped. Loggin out!!! |

This is simple...it is coffee at $5/lb shipped. Loggin out!!! I have no issues with you stating your opinion on the coffee, however, you continue to go beyond that. You made personal attacks on those who didn't share your opinion and you continue to do so, saying that those who don't agree with you don't know what they are talking about. Presenting an honest review is not thread crapping, it adds to the discussion. Perhaps you should take a look at the forum rules seeing that you are a new member here. |

Coffee is on a bitter side and has good to very good body - probably, due to a Arabica blend - it also gives me one of the best cremas - tried to alter grind and it doesn't do anything to the taste, but gives you a better crema on the finer settings - if Amazon extends the deal, I will buy more - as I posted before, this is probably Lavazza's southern espresso blend (espresso in southern Italy is bitter) - will try to make drip coffee next week - as some folks did with positive results, will post later. Good luck! |

MISURICK said:if Amazon extends the deal, I will buy more If you enjoy this blend, you may as well buy more now. It is vacuum sealed (under nitrogen I'm guessing) and mine has a expiration of 04/2009. If you wait, you're likely to get beans from the same lot since they roast in such large batches. I've been using my beans, finely ground, in an Aeropress. I've gone a week straight using this blend and brew method. It makes an unusual, yet decent cup of coffee. I've still to get used to the flavor. There is a bit of nuttiness in the finish. |

Kassaal, good point....I bet there is a ton of this just sitting in the Amazon warehouse...I am going to order more now, because they often run out of there promo's. I bet they are all the same lot numbers also. My first batch was also dated 4/2009 kassaal said:MISURICK said:if Amazon extends the deal, I will buy more If you enjoy this blend, you may as well buy more now. Have been using this beans for a couple weeks - and bitterness kind of went away (I guess you get used to the taste), espresso has very good body - unsurpassed crema from this beans (use finner setting on your grinder). Didn't like drip - it's not bad - but a waste of good espresso beans. Good luck! Exp. date is like 04/09 on mine - ordered more. |
