I love my D40. You can buy with your Amazon's visa card. Besides the 1500 points (worth $15) back, this visa card automatically extends your warranty for an additional year for free. You can also buy extended warranty ($79 for five years). Not sure whether you want to keep this for five years though.

What makes this special is that it's from such a great dependable company with excellent customer service and return policies.
It is not from authorized Nikon retailer. You may lose your warranty.

Damn, I just spent over $400 on Amazon before lunch on the onkyo 605 receiver and a center channel. How am I gonna swing another $500 purchase after lunch past the wifey???????? Green.
However, I'm sorta droolin' over this one as it's got the SD card and my laptop has that. I've always been a canon die-hard - well, apparently not THAT DIE hard b/c now I'm considering a different one JUST for the SD card...ahh well...the canon has served me well! Off to fleabay I rekon!

Conclusion: In everyday use the D40 is just what it set out to be, a very capable, compact, lightweight and easy to use camera which makes a perfect first step for anyone wanting to get into digital SLR photography. It provides enough control and a large enough range of manual settings to enable you to experiment and learn but also helps you to take great pictures in the process. It's one of those cameras you can just pick up and start shooting without fuss, that you can hand to a friend who's never used an SLR and know they'll be able to do the same. All of this and a pretty decent kit lens for $600, I'd say it's a bit of a bargain.
The D40 kit with 1GB SD is also available from Abe's of Maine here using the Nice1Abe $10 off coupon. The $15 difference can be used towards a bigger SD card as the prices keep on dropping.

I am a Nikon die-hard on the 35mm SLR. When the digital camera came out, I switched to Canon. Compares the pictures from Canon DLSR to Nikon's, I am going back to the Nikon. I still like Nikon lenses better.

To all who are considering purchasing the D40: Remember that it WILL NOT autofocus with non AF-S lenses. If you're only going to be using AF-S lenses for now that's not a big deal, but if you ever want to use, say, a fast prime or an older lens, you'll be focusing manually. That means scratch the excellent 50mm 1.8 off the list as far as autofocusing goes.
Having said that: I am a D40 owner and love it. It's compact but its grip is not miniature like the XTi's is. It's a great camera, I've made excellent prints up to 11"x14" from it. If you're going to be doing a LOT of low-light shooting and want a sub-f/2 lens, you're better off getting a D80 unless you are OK with manual focusing all of the time, which happens to be difficult in low light. I've got the D40, an SB-600, the 17-55 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8 VR and I'm happy as a clam.
I should also add that I've been very happy with two of those 2GB Kingston cards. Remember, having a fast card doesn't affect how many continuous shots you can take. Your camera's buffer is what affects that. The biggest advantage of hi-speed cards is how quickly they transfer to your computer.

I just purchased the SB-400 from them and got it last Monday, after a wait of a few weeks since it was back-ordered when I ordered it to take advantage of the Nice1Abe coupon code. My only gripe was that they charged my credit card immediately whereas other sellers would only charge when the item ships.
Most of the complaints in resellerratings seem to be regarding "bait and switch" related but as long as you say no they seem to be OK. Again, this is just based on the comments. In my case there was no call to offer additional items whatsoever, maybe because all I purchased was an external flash.

Excellent point and great advice. I used the D40x and loved the camera feel better than the other day when I picked up the XTi (due to that smaller grip). I want the ability to use that prime lens, though. Without being able to autofocus, I had to send the D40x back. I'm contemplating the XTi and comparable Pentax and Olympus models now...
On another note, you can get a much better return policy for $20 more: Costco
I have a D40 and use it with old (I mean OLD) prime lenses all the time, my fave is a Nikkor 1.4 where I have to do manual exposure in addition to focusing. Manual focusing isn't that hard, there's a little green light in the viewfinder that tells you when it's in focus. I have pics of moving animals, people playing softball, and more using manual focus. It is something that gets easier the more you do it, and kind of makes using autofocus boring.

I agree with you. Manual focus is not that hard. Also, I love the good old Nikkor lenses.

There is an easier way if you want to use a SD card: You can get a CF to SD card adapter for your camera. It looks like a CF card, but has a slot for a SD card. (Can't vouch for how well they work since I never used one, though)
Or if you don't want to do that, get a PCMCIA/Express Card CF reader for you laptop. Cost: about $10-15
