I had a 20 year old B&D toaster oven that still worked fast and well that I stupidly decided was too old and used-looking so after spotting a deal here for a new B&D toaster oven for $5 AR, I donated the old one to Goodwill. The new toaster oven was 1/3 slower than the old one and caught fire after about 8 months. I then went on a toaster oven crusade, researching almost every model on the market, reading hundreds of owner reviews and buying models from Oster, Proctor Silex, Euro Pro and one or two others, but taking each one back because of poor performance (8+ minutes to toast bread), poor construction quality and/or unsafe design of the door. I finally checked out some extremely enthusiastic reviews on Amazon for a $100 Panasonic that used an infrared bulb instead of heating coils and went with that one. Some of the Amazon reviewers gushed that this toaster oven was so wonderful it essentially allowed them to spend more time with their families, save their marriages, invent a cure for cancer, etc.... I didn't find it that life-changing of an item, but it does do a good job and takes less time to toast or reheat leftovers than virtually anything else on the market.

For something as simple as a toaster oven, you'd think it would be hard to screw up, but unreliable, poorly performing units are the rule rather than the exception. Even spending $100 or $150 on a more expensive Kitchen Aid or de Longhi or Cuisinart won't guarantee you'll have a unit that functions for more than a year or two. My advice is that if your old toaster oven still works well, keep it until it dies. For certain types of appliances, like toaster ovens and hot water heaters, the old adadge "they don't make 'em like they used to" actually is very true.

Ditto! Did that with both my toaster, toaster oven, blender, and pressure cooker (I blame on it on the new wife, she wanted stuff that looked 'nicer/newer/cleaner/etc'). And now we got junk for all the stuff. The new B&D toaster oven caught on fire too.
