if you can't go month to month, how long does this $100 card buy you,for a minimum contract period?

Can't do month to month, you have to commit for at least a year.

Monthly prices would be $16.95 for a 1 yr commit, $14.95 for a 2 yr commit or $12.95 for a 3 yr commit. The gift card would then be good for the following:

5.90 months for 1 yr leaving $103.40 to finish out contract.
6.69 months for 2 yrs leaving $258.80 to finish out contract.
7.72 months for 3 yrs leaving $366.20 to finish out contract.

You can also prepay which makes it cheaper per month.

1 yr prepaid would be an additional $79
2 yrs prepaid would be an additional $179
3 yrs prepaid would be an additional $199

The finally if you already own a TiVo then you can get $6 off per month on the additional Tivos with the multiservice discount.

It is also good to note that the TiVo becomes pretty much useless without a subscription, so don't think you will do 1 yr then stop paying and still use it.

So my out-of-pocket cost for a three year commitment paid in advance is $99 + $199 = $298 or $8.33/month. Right now I'm paying $6.95 for my ReplayTV (have Showstopper with lifetime service). But the TiVo has a lot more features in terms of content. Decisions, decisions....

Thanks for all the great info!

Just a general question about the TiVo monthly plan. Can the rates be raised during the duration of the commitment? For instance, if I commit to the 3 year plan for $12.95, can they raise the price within the three years?

They can chance, but if you make a commitment they won't change for you. If they do that is considered a breach of contract and you could get out with no penalty.

Very nice! Thanks Einselen for the info!

I am having the hardest time deciding on 1 2 or 3 year plan. Seems like a good idea to go with the 3 year monthly, for $12.95 per month, this way they cannot up the cost.. during that time. I just hope my New TiVo HD lasts 3 years...

Hmm, dead?
When I click the buy both together, it says subtotal 99.00 in my cart, but then I go to check out and it says 199!

I waited an hour to get this, was that too long?

Still alive for me. It shows items as $199 but then after the shipping price it has Best Value Savings: -$100.00.

that's what I see ;/ Do you think the Prime has anything to do with it? I put the shipping to normal for both items, but the total still says 199?

I have Prime and it worked for me?

Really weird, then.... if I view my cart, subtotal is 99, if I checkout, it goes to 199. I have NO idea why, emailing customer service and asking what's going on.

Did you add the items to your cart by clicking "Buy both and save" ?

The best deal is paying $299 for 3 years. You'll be paying that much after 18 months at $16.95, 20 months at $14.95, and 23 months at $12.95.

YES. I've done this multiple times, clearing my cart, clicking always ONLY the "Buy both and save" button. Still no love.

I guess Amazon just hates me!

I tried it again and it is no longer working for me either? I would call Amazon at 1-866-216-1072. They should be able to help right away instead of waiting for an email response.

They had me go ahead and submit the order even though it said 199. Apparently they're "going to fix it on their end" or something...

It is TiVo Basic service only, not TiVo Plus.

Not sure why you are posting about basic as you can find lifetime Tiv0s on FleeBay. Currently looking at the Dual Tuners it would be about $600 with shipping for a lifetime, that would be two prepaid sessions of 3 years (assuming the price is the same in 3 years). Granted 6 years is not a long time and many Tiv0 users have their original Tiv0s from when they first came out and purchased lifetime on them, but if you are wanting to upgrade to HD in the near future this route may not be the best as lifetime is tied to the box (besides the occasional transfer lifetime for a fee options that Tiv0 has done).

I'm in on this instead of a lifetime unit for the simple reason that at some point I'm going to want a HD TiVo. That point is *probably* going to be less than 5 years from now; hence, it makes no sense for me to think about lifetime, since lifetime is only cost-effective anymore if you plan to keep it for 5-6 years.

I'm definitely wishing I'd gotten one of those Best Buy lifetime subscription gift cards before they ran out!

At any rate, this deal - about $300 for 3 years with a free unit thrown in - is good enough to hold me over until HD TiVo gets cheaper, and HD actually becomes more available here... and maybe even more affordable from the current Ripoffs-R-Us prices at my local cable company!

I disagree.... i bought lifetime from a friend for around $400.00. the reason lifetime is worth it even if u buy it for 2 years is you can still sell it/xfer it in a couple of years.

The 'Digital' in Series 2 DT is misleading. Think of it as 2 tuner analog. The 'digital' fame requires a cablebox *decoding* and feeding in composite (not component!) input. So that you know there is not even a component OUT!

The "digital" in DVR (digital video recorder) isn't referring to the input signal...it's talking about how the video is stored for playback...a VCR stores the video/audio in an analog format on VHS tapes...a DVR stores the video/audio in a digital format (encoded video data in MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 formats, for example) typically on a hard disk drive.

Bottom line: The data is stored as 1's and 0's (digitally) on a hard disk drive, just like a computer file...much different than an analog VHS tape.
