Who can use the Costco Program?
Anyone who is interested in trading in/recycling a qualifying product.

So, apparently you do NOT need to be a Costco member. However, remember that if your item has a trade-in value, you will receive it in the form of a Costco Cash Card.

Well, then someone should also mention that "anyone" who has a Costco Cash Card can walk into any Costco and receive any and all member benefits/savings just like any Costco member (purchases are limited to the value of the Costco Cash Card in their possession).

Dude, you ROCK. I have never heard of this. I have a dead PS in a compaq notebook. They are saying $135 for it. I just need to wipe the HDD, and then WooHoo! Maybe that is "Pays for my WOOT Zune", which I also love. Now we just need to start preparing for Black Friday deals and warming up our Credit Cards...

I hope Canada's Costco stores will have this too.

Props to Costco!

I forgot about that one - thanks for posting that website. I need to hunt down that old laptop for some quick cash.

" OD has already announced they are ending the in-store pickup option for web orders in within next 30 days."

===================================================================

"Since July Staples has been prorating Easy Rebate amounts for purchases that use the 12% Customer Appreciation coupon."

bballcards said:cnIsfg said:BS! The majority of OD rebates (online & B&M) have ALWAYS asked for a copy of the UPC. I have 200+ old OD rebate forms from old submitted OD offers saved on my local hard drive. They cover three different rebate processing companies all the way back to the original OD in-house offers processed in Delray Beach, through the Express Group years and finally to the new YA offers and all of them but 3 in December of this past year ask either the original or a copy of the UPC. Nothing has changed. People have said that your responses not only sound authoritative but are also often complete misinformation. This is yet another example of this. It is true that in the past, OD rebates required copies of the UPC. But last year, they stopped doing so (for whatever reason). (link)

And of course the all-time classic: NO the pamphlet I got last night from OD explicitly states a $125 quarter $500 year cash card limit for worklife. It does state earn unlimited rewards on the front but that if you actually read the details that refers to things like the 10% instant savings OD gives worklife memeber on OD branded products and other select instant savings on non-tech items at the register when you use your worklife card. On the back under the terms it also states tech items excluded from worklife quartery reward. You can get the pamphlet at any OD though you may have to ask for it before June 1st. link This pamphlet still has not surfaced . . .

In fact it is cheaper if you aren't a member to shop there (B&M, not sure about online). If you have a costco gift card (bought for 90-95% of face value on eBay of course), you can show that as proof of membership when you walk in. Then when checking out all you have to do is show them the gift card, and they will accept it no questions asked, they won't (shouldn't) even ask you for a membership card.

Thus, it's cheaper to shop there without being a member, why pay a $40 dollar membership fee?

For the AMEX costco card and the various costco member services!

I'd give this thread more green, but it's so difficult to do that with my arms wrapped around this tree. I heart the environment.

i wonder if they'll accept barebones (old mobo in a computer case)

Another worthwhile option is to give your old electronics to a 'Computers for Classrooms' program, such as THIS ONE.

Costco values seem to be a bit higher. I plugged in an old Treo 600 and Cstco is saying $40 while CC is saying $29.60.

If you want to keep the HDD try doing the estimate without it. It is only $20 less for my HP laptop without the HDD.

Didn't we already pay the recycling fee when buying the computer/monitor?

I just called the local trash service to arrange for bulky items pick-up and they came to pick obsolete computers/monitors for free. YMMV?

awesome, great way to get rid of CRT's.

Our village runs a program but its far and between. Thanks OP, time to haul some heavy monitors

cnIsfg said:This program has been on Costco's site since April. However, no one paid any attention until they moved it to their home page. The part about Costco insuring you item will be recycled is total BS. They have no control over what happens to the item you turn in. All of these programs offered by retailers and manufacturers (ie Costco, Staples, HP, Sony, etc ) are all run by the same Canadian company Mediagrif. People here might know them better by one of their US subsidiaries Market Velocity. Virtually NONE of the items collected through those programs are recycled in the sense that they are melted down and reused to make new products. Market Velocity takes all this junk that is turned iin and resells it to salvage dealers like us. We get 3-4 calls a month from them just in our Phoenix home office. About 75% of the junk Market Velocity collects and sells to salvage dealers ends up on eBay and then eventually ends up right back in your communities where the cycle often repeats itself. The other 25% of trade-ins Market Velocity collects are simply too damaged for resell or contain hazardous materials such as CRT monitors. Those item are shipped to Galveston TX and loaded on barges. Those bardges are then sent to Indonesia where environmental laws don’t exist. The point here being if you are recycling through these programs and actually believe you are helping to clean the Earth you are sadly mistaken.

Hey, thanks for the info. I'm having second doubts on this for the CRT monitors. I think I'll just wait until our village hosts another recycling program. Anyone knows of support for cnisfg claims?

So on Costco's page, it says the program is run by GreenSight Technologies LLC.
A quick look on the webpage shows that it tries to recover any items first... those that can't... "GreenSight conforms to a "Zero Landfill/No Export" Policy by working with only ISO 14001 certified partners who recycle and refine these materials for remanufacturing into new products."
