Don't a lot of VoIP providers allow you to xfer ph#'s to them and away from them? If so, try finding somebody like that to use for a month and then switch away from them to whatever your long-term plans are. Just a thought though I'm very ignorant on the subject as I've never really had my own commercial VoIP service (thought I have written a lot of software implementing them).

Was thinking about switching to Comcast (doing an in-store signup promo somewhere) and then getting this

Earlier this month I switched all 3 of our cell phone lines to prepaid so VoIP at home would be much better/cheaper than a landline

Are the upload speeds the same as the regular DSL plans?

How did you decline? (Do you order online or by phone?)

You can reuse the old dsl modem if you used dsl services before.

I ordered by phone. I told the CSR that I will buy the modem from a retail store. I have never used dsl service before and hence done have a modem.

I got this a while ago. It works great. I had DSL service at my old house and moved. No issues... I'm in Michigan.

I got my first bill for $23.99 out the door. I then upgraded my service a few days ago to the $28.99 package.

It's really nice. You can also go to www.dslreports.com and there is a Sbcdirect forum monitored by ATT techs if you have any issues.

I've had this service for like a month and a half now (3.0mb/s). It works great- no problems with losing connection or anything. I switched to a VoIP phone with Skype (couldn't really find a better deal for something that doesn't require a computer to connect). I get unlimited calls to and from Canada and the US, no matter what # it is. Great phone quality- works out to about 16$ a month with my set up for the first year (Skype ends up being about 6.55$ a month, and I bought a 116$ phone, and later found an 85$ one at micro center). I use the phone that doesn't require your computer to be on, and it works great. Just make sure your modem is on .

Nope. You just turned down the best deal..........

Honestly, I didn't ask specifically about the upload speeds. However, the phone rep kept calling it the "Pro" plan and I asked if there would be any difference between what I was getting and what I currently had and she said no (I currently have the 3.0 plan w/landline phone).

So while I can't say for sure, I think it is the same as the regular plans.

Folks need to consider that it maybe cheaper or not much more to get measured rate service and DSL versus just a dry pair. Unfortunately, the cost of service and taxes is different in different places, so each person is going to need to check this for themselves.

If you're in an area which is highly competitive, AT&T will sometimes pull out special offers. I recently threatened to switch to Comcast and was given a discount on my voice, covering the base cost of my measured rate service.

that's blasphemy....how can you suggest such a thing??

It's not cheaper because that's what I have right now.

No doubt.. I have a SERIOUS problem of paying $24.00 for a landline that I never use! At first, my LL was $12 here.. then taxes and a PICC'd long distance carrier that charged a $2/month fee.. then more taxes there.. now it ended up to be $24.

I can't agree more. I LOVE this option of naked DSL. I've been toying with the idea of going back to cable for quite a while, but now there's no need to! AT&T just kept a customer that they prolly woulda lost otherwise!

Could anyone provide some information for the state of Pennslvyania.

Green for OP!

Question for all, though: I'm interested in getting the dry loop and perhaps getting set up with some VOIP service so I can connect to Brinks for my home security system. I ONLY use the phone line for brinks, and that at no more than 3-4 calls a month. Does anyone know of a particular VOIP service that is cheap (based on making very few calls) and works with Brinks?

Just called. The 23.99/28.99 dry-loop deals are available in Arkansas.

However, I opted to go with a measured rate & a $10 credit for 6 months, rather than dryloop.

It was a few dollars more expensive, but I get to keep my phone line. I'll call back in 6 months and try to go dryloop then.

FYI, the rep kept telling me there would be 5-7 days of "downtime" while they did "wiring changes." Not sure if this is true, but I don't need the hassle right now.

Finally done with the scam SBC phone fees. After getting naked DSL in Chicago, just called Vonage and got offered 19.99 for 6 months with 14.99 for shipping for free adapter and no activation fee. Took the deal. Will change to 500 minute plan for 14.99 after 6 months. In the terms and conditions, saw the hidden 39.99 termination fee .. but I guess that's normal for everybody ... or not??
