Free $10 credit!! So far it's worked in Boston, DC and SF. Nice. Repeating what I just mentioned over there. There are a lots of zipcar coupons around, some even more generous, for example at retail me not. Yes, your mileage will vary but the gas is free! |

The $10 bucks above is the only code so far I've found for existing members. |

Thanks, OP! Just found out that there are 3 Zipcars in a lot just 1 mile from my house. I had signed up with the expectation that I would have to travel about 3 miles. That's a BIG improvement! |

Funny. I guess they immediately mail the cards whether or not you are approved. I applied on the 26th. On the 27th, I received an email that they were having trouble obtaining my driver license info online(I put my last name first, exactly as on license). I emailed them back to try with my first name first then. On the 28th, they sent an email that they would try again on the next business. On the 31st, I received the card in the mail. It was mailed on the 27th. My online status shows insurance/license check still processing. I have not yet received an approval email either. |

russellt said:How is a $68 per day rental car with a 180 mile limit a good deal when most citis have 10-20 per day unlimited mileage rates available. Thre are codes that avoid the young driver rates.$9/hr is hot, are you just trying to find something to complain about? Where can you find a code to avoid young driver rates? I am out of that age bracket now, but THAT would be a hot deal for a young renter. The problem is there has NEVER been a code to avoid young driver rates. There may be programs or clubs you can join to avoid the rates (and if you know of any, please share them) but there are not general codes. On my honeymoon, I paid $240 for the rental and $250 for the under 25 fee... I was not happy. |

Come to NYC. Rental cars start about about $100/day minimum, and hourly is not an option with the exception of one rental company that has caught onto the lost business they're losing to ZipCar and has begun an hourly offer similar to what ZipCar offers. |

I did some research and couldn't find a single positive thing about zipcar in NYC. The service seems to be horrible there. |

I think Zipcars are great, but for very specific applications. I think the biggest problem about this service would be a gripe about the city itself. Parking is murderous, bridge travel is ridiculously expensive, traffic is insane, and public transit and taxis serve well enough in most cases. For me, I use Zipcars mostly to pick up and drop off visitors at the airport who are unfamiliar with the city and to go furniture runs. Don't want to leave an armoire on the street in NYC, after all Everything else is bus/train/cab domain for me. I've had no problems with the customer service and the entire system seems pretty automated and never had a problem with the web reservation system, the independent garage operators always know what's going on, and the billing system has never overbilled me. The cars are also surprisingly clean, in my experience. Overall, I'm quite happy with Zipcars, as much as one can be driving in NYC. The rigors of car ownership in the city is basically what Zipcar is all about anyway, right? |

Zipcar seems to have its place. People under the age of 25 have to pay a surcharge for rentals at Avis/Hertz/etc. The surcharge can be as much as $25.00 per day. Also, you don't have insurance with Avis/Hertz. Sooner or later, you will have a wreck. If you are driving an Avis car, you could get stuck paying for the rental car and perhaps the other persons car. |

A little-known point about car rentals in NYC is that rental vehicle companies in New York are required to maintain liability insurance for the cars they rent. That, combined with the loss and damage insurance that AMEX (or most major credit cards provide), is usually enough for most cases. Whenever they ask if you want to pay for insurance, you're actually paying above and beyond what they're already required to pay ... and most of the contracts are written such that if you add your own insurance, they hit yours first before tapping into what they're required to carry. Good to know if you're a NYC car renter. |

I couldn't imagine renting a car (even if by the hour) to drive out to the airport and bring guests back to my apt. How long does the whole adventure take you...from leaving your apt., to getting the car, to going to the airport, waiting for your visitors, driving back in to the city, dropping the car off...man that's a lot of work. I'd rather pay the $30 and have my guests jump in a cab to LGA. Heck, I'd probably rather pay the $60 to JFK than spend several hours and at least half that much bringing them there in a rental car! |
