Wow, you must be a fantastic host. I couldn't imagine renting a car (even if by the hour) to drive out to the airport and bring guests back to my apt. How long does the whole adventure take you...from leaving your apt., to getting the car, to going to the airport, waiting for your visitors, driving back in to the city, dropping the car off...man that's a lot of work. I'd rather pay the $30 and have my guests jump in a cab to LGA. Heck, I'd probably rather pay the $60 to JFK than spend several hours and at least half that much bringing them there in a rental car! Haha, that's how I feel sometimes. All told, I can usually do the whole run within a 2 hour rental block, as picking up the car is less than a 2 minute walk for me, and traffic is pretty light on weekends. Start driving right when they land and you'll be around by the time the guys from LGA or JFK actually bring the luggage out. Plus, I think it's a nice touch to greet people personally at the airport when the get in...some of the less city-savvy people get outright scared at the thought of taking a subway or even a taxi. I think that's supposed to be the appeal of a Zipcar. None of those customary rental car lines, talking to agents, etc. Just find a nearby car online, give the garage a call to dig the car out of storage, swipe your card, and go. It all feels much more like a carshare than a traditional rental car. Though you're right, I'm still probably way too nice to my guests |

'How long does the whole adventure take you...from leaving your apt., to getting the car, to going to the airport, waiting for your visitors, driving back in to the city' Well at SFO, there is Caltrans, BART & the regular bus. Cost is about $4.50 & these bring you to SF from SFO. Then you can pick up your friends |

Lorrie's shuttles is also great for SFO. $15, they pick you up at your door as early as 4 and you can be at the gate in 20 minutes from SOMA. |

I received the zipcard by mail yesterday. It seems that the zipcard needs to be activated. Does anyone know exactly when the clock for the 1-year membership starts? If the membership starts when the zipcard is activated, a better strategy to take a full advantage of the free 1-year membership is to activate the zipcard right before the first rental. On the other hand, if the membership starts when the application is approved, this delay of zipcard activation won't help. Any thoughts, advice? |

CaptainAlias said:Also if you live in Alexandria, VA, I believe the city will pay for 1 year of membership as well. Thanks for this information. For any alexandria residents, the information is here: http://www.alexride.org/carsharing.php#carsharealex Apparently they reimburse first-time applicants for signup and annual fees, but no usage fees obviously. |

I was reading BostonNOW and they had a post about a free Zipcar Membership for anyone that texted this number [...]I just got an e-mail from ZipCar with the following promotion:Please join us at Equinox Fitness this Thursday, January 24th, from 5:30 to 7:30!
Equinox, located at 131 Dartmouth Street in Boston, is opening its doors for Zipcar members. Stop by and try out the club, pick up some free stuff, and enjoy some beverages and nibbles (and not just rice cakes and herbal tea—that's after you join). In addition, Equinox is offering Zipcar members over $500 in savings when they join. Enjoy 50% off the initiation fee, plus free spa treatments, one-on-one training, and guest passes for friends and family.
Bring a non-member and you'll earn $25 in driving credit. Your friend will get a free Zipcar membership and the great Equinox deal. Sounds like a win-win to us!Equinox has fitness centers in other cities, so this or a similar promo might be going on elsewhere where Equinox and ZipCar co-exist. (Please post if you find out about specific cities.) There is no other info about whether the bonuses or promos are linked to actually buying anything from Equinox. If so, that could be a deal killer. (If anyone thinks this should be a separate topic, feel free to copy and paste.) |

I know this deal is dead, and I alerted mods to move to expired deals. After al this time, and even received member card, I checked my status and saw that the application had been denied. Did not call to check, but I suspect it was because I was applying from GA. Anyone else get this? |
