There is a magnetic switch: it consists of two parts -- the light and the magnet. When the two touch, the light goes off, when they are appart, the light turns on. I got these last time for about the same price. Well worth it. I keep one underneath the sink -- when the cabinet door opens, the magnet and the light separate and ... voilla.. there is light.
My guess would be that it has some kind of movement sensor. Does anyone know what kind of batteries this uses (AAA?).

each light comes with a small magnetized metal plate that activates the light when it (or the light) moves past it. affix either light or plate to drawer or cabinet door, for example and light goes on/off when "activated"
