SIM Card Unlock Code FAQs (from TMO.com)

Are there any TMO phones that cannot be unlocked?

Currently, all TMO Sidekick® phones and the TMO To Go Nokia 2610P are unable to be unlocked.

could this phone be 'unlocked' or something in the future to use as a regular TMobile non-prepaid phone?

thanks

Don't need to unlock to use as a TM postpaid.

And they're afair hard to unlock.

If you have a T-Mobile monthly plan, you can simply insert your existing sim in this phone and it will work just fine. After putting your existing sim into the phone you can have T-Mobile provide the unlock code for free. You do have to be a T-Mobile customer for at least 3 months or they won't do it. Just call them, tell them you are travelling overseas and therefore you need the unlock code. They ask for brand/model of the phone and usually they will e-mail the code within a few days.

This is a dual band phone. Not a quad band world phone. Bands 850 & 1900 & won't work overseas.

That's what they told me when I requested the unlock for a Nokia 6030. Tell them you are going to Canada or somewhere else that uses 850/1900. Grabbed one of these phones earlier today to get the $25 card.
Editted to fix spelling.

That sounds good.

You can add Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, etc... to the list of countries that operate on 850/1900

Call me a rookie, but if i put my existing sim (T-Mobile of course) into the phone...that should be it..no? Why would i need a unlock code if i'm going tmo to tmo? thanks.

you could use that unlocked phone overseas with local providers in those international countries saving you those ghastly worldwide roaming charges.

Woo, time to re-use my SamSung A437. I was looking for a T-Mobile SIM card.

The V195 is a very good basic phone. I got a couple early last year for $42 shipped each to use as backups for me and the wife. They also came with $25 topup cards. I got the unlock codes from tmobile as soon as the phone arrives. (Yes, tmobile will give you the code after 90 days of service in good standing). Where else can you get a very good quad-band phone for $17 net.
