BB has this drive on sale for $132.99. 10%/12% coupons just came back again today... as found here.
My store (Dearborn, MI) had 5 of them on the shelf, and they were all DTG serial numbers. I'll admit this might be a fluke, but I was happy to see it is still possible. Since the original thread is dead I thought I would post it up again, mods do as you wish.

Picked one up at Nashville West bestbuy, One left. used 12% rewards zone coupon and was like $117 before tax.
You can tell the DTG's apart quickly by looking for a USB POWERED in the upper left of the blister packaging.

i wonder how much faster it drains the battery... maybe, best to be used as intended, an external... hm.

Actually, this is a pretty poor choice to be used as an extrenal drive. The enclosure is a little more bulky and less solid than the WD units, and it requires two USB ports for power, with connectors big enough that you can't use side by side ports as packaged on most laptops. It is just my opinion, but the 7200 rpm drive here is overkill for use in an external usb box.
The real deal is that the 7200 rpm 7k200 series Hitachi drive is one of the fastest (if not the?) laptop drives available, and typically runs in the $180 ish range for OEM. So you are taking the gamble of a no warranty drive + a USB enclosure for a total of $120 or so. These model enclosures of course, contain a SATA to mini USB interface...
I can't say I'm terribly comfortable with technically having no warranty (though I suspect you could fanagle with Hitachi for at least the 1 year...) but at a $60 savings I'm ok with the gamble.

No DTG's left in the Short Pump - Richmond VA - store. I was there yesterday and looked at the 8 or so they had on the shelf.

This drive doesn't necessarily require 2 USB ports to power. I have used mine on 2 Toshiba laptops and it runs fine using just a single USB port.
I bought another one today (DTG) for $140.97 OTD. The cashier wouldn't take the %10 coupon since the HD was already on sale. I tried with the manager but no go. Still a good price for a 200GB 7200.
Thanks OP.

I just looked up the serial number on my bare drive. Full warranty, the fact its out of the enclosure should not be an issue.
What if I want to use it has an external? I mean with 7200RPM AND USB Powered...double standard. Will it perform like a 7200 RPM 3.5 External that requires AC? Thanks!
I got one at Douglasville today. There were more. The shelf tag does not indicate sale price. I had the manager ring it up for me. He looked surprised!

I spotted these again in the Avon, OH store as well. I cleaned them out of what was on the shelf when this deal first came out, so I was suprised to see more available. I picked up one for a buddy who missed the first time around, but there are 3 left on the shelf if anyone in the area is still looking for one of these (or all ). There is one non-DTG there as well, so look before you leap.

none that I could find in Downey,CA. The drives are in a hard plastic case ( protect from shoplifting ) making it very hard to find the serial number. Had to stand in line for checkout to have then open case to find it was not DTG.

The serial number is on the outside of the packaging.
I purchased two of these drives. Two I put in notebooks. I sold the drives that were replaced and even sold the external enclosure for $10. All in all it was only a $60 upgrade. It made both laptops (Vostro 1400 & Gateway ML6720) run very fast (boot speed, copying files, etc.).
Carnivore said: Checked my local BB, they had a bunch with WHG serials. Any reports on these?
From what I've read you need DTG or DEG serial numbers... SN label on the bottom of the package.
Everything else or S/N on the back is a no-go. But, I was told BB would do a regular refund on it after verifying everything is ok. Since you can check the drive ID through just USB hook up without disassembly, it's possible to check it out and just return it if it's a no go.
That warranty sticker is solid though, probably one of the best tamper proof stickers I've seen. Very little chance of removing it without it being noticeable.

The serial number is on the outside of the packaging. But the packaging was inside the hard plastic case that covered the serial number

Not any more! I picked it up this morning. I was surprised it was still there. They had about 8 drives total but only one DTG left. Thanks if you were the one who pushed this one to the back of the shelf.
Want to say thanks to OP and thread. Picked up one at the Sanford, FL BBY and there had to be at least 8 more drives on the shelf, but I know at least 3 more had serials DTG. Used the 12% RZ coupon... Was worried for 1/2 minute when my cashier turned to the cashier behind her and asked if she could use the coupon, 2nd cashier indicated it could be used if the item was not on sale. I said "I don't think its on sale" and cashier scanned it... viola! 117 + tax

Thanks, OP. After not seeing any 'DTG'drives at Tuttle Crossing in Central Ohio, I did manage to find one in Marysville, OH. If anyone is interested, they still had 3 of the 'DTG' drives left. Shelf tag and register had the correct price, and I had no problems using the 12% RZ.
Performance wise, all I can say is "WoW". Huge difference from the 5400RPM 200Gig Toshiba in my Acer.

They are in kind of a 1/2 cylinder plastic type case.
My Best Buy seems to have a never ending supply of these DTG drives. Just picked one up for $126 including tax using the prinatable coupon.

Ignore the web site. The ones with s a serial number starting with DTG are 7200. I have two of them.
It was on sale for the week. This is the second time they go for that price. Just keep an eye out. It's sure to happen again soon. I'd call the deal "dormant" instead of "dead"

BB has put this drive on sale now either 3 or 4 times. The original thread is 90 some odd days old. The first time someone figured this out, the drive was selling for over $200 from places like Newegg. Now the price has dropped a bit so it's not quite the deal it once was. The original verdict was DTG serial numbers were only an early run, but they seem to keep popping up, so I'm not sure that is completely true.
Anyways, if the sale happens again and you can find a DTG serial number drive, rest assured it is a 7k200 drive. If you are really paranoid you can identify it through the USB connection first, before tearing it up. The main risk is lack of warranty support, though the jury is still out about whether or not Hitachi is rigid enough to deny warranty on the actual drive's serial number...
