JC Penny has rather large selection of mens suits, suit jackets, and dress pants at 75% off. I had a formal last night (Saturday) and stopped by a few hours earlier.. ended up with a full Stafford suit for 75 bucks (retail was 300), and threw in two pairs of plaid dress pants at 15 bucks each. This appears to be B&M only; I priced the suit at JCPenny.com and it's only 33% off (costs 199.99.) This was in the Albany, NY store, and the Mens Department salesman told me other stores were doing it as well. I also saw a selection of Tuxedo jacket + pant combos for 99.99. Not a bad investment.
There was also a rack of much higher end suits (starting retail 500+ dollars) that were marked down to 75% off.
I've never bought a suit at JC Penney before, but other department stores typically do the alterations (or send them off to be done--I know Macy's and, back in the day, Dayton's use to do it). The only difference I've noticed is that it typically takes longer than elsewhere and you don't usually have the option to rush the job at additional cost.

Throw in a 15% off coupon to bring it down to $63.75 (requires a previous purchase).

I wasn't sure if the 15% coupon was stackable, but if so, it's a pretty hot deal.
Also, as to the previous question, yes, they do alterations.

Just FYI, the first time I went suit shopping, I went to JCPenney's... most of the suits looked really cheap. I ended up going to Macy's and got a really nice RL suit (although it was about 3x more than most of the suits at JCP). Macy's was also able to do a rush alteration on my suit and it was done that afternoon... even though I had to pay quite a bit more for the alterations.
I have bought many suits from Penney's. They do have some cheap ones, but many are very nice. They do alterations. Whenever I need a suit I always go to their sale/clearance event. Truth is a $450 suit for $100 is a great deal, probably not going to get a RL suit for $100, but quality will be about the same.
I buy Portly size suits from J C Penney, which reduces the amount of alterations needed. Look at the 44P (and similar) sizes if you are girth-challenged and normally require tailor-made Both trousers and coats are available in the P variant.
I want to confirm for Deptford Mall in South Jersey. I paid $50 for the long coat that normally costs $200, also bought 3 pairs of high end boots - they are all 75%. Also bought bedding set - I left the mall with the trunk full of nice stuff

Wouldn't portly be height challenged? I only know from personal experience.
Last year I purchased a hot looking $600 Italian suit at JCp's for $105 during one of these sales. Yes they have some cheap suits like everyone else but they also have some damn good stuff as well.
Are all the bar codes from the 15% coupon the same? mine is MC44493000000000000000000

Got some great deals in Grand Rapids, MI also...
the code on my coupon was MC4449290000000000000000, so it's just slightly different, or if you find anything online use the discount code JANSURV for 15% off.

I had a short notice interview and had to get a suit quickly couple years ago. No time for alterations. I went to JCP and they have a lot of "seperates" so you can mix and match. The guy was awesome, patient and really helped me out. I still have and use that suit. It has heald up well.
Yes, there regular $69 suits (or w/e) are cheap. But go up just one or two and they are a decent suit. Especially if you are in hurry.

that's awesome.. you paid 2.5x more than you should have just because of the name. im sure the suit's quality is a little better, but you could have had 3 different kinds for the same price.
yes, jc penney alters. rates are usually located near the fitting room counter.

I dont know if this has been mentioned before but a "ok" suit that has been tailored really well is a lot better than a great suit that hasn't been tailored well. The main difference is the expensive ones wrinkle less easily.
I just called the JCPenny here in Lafayette, In. They have a 75% off sale on Wednesday. Until then its a 50 % off sale.

Just a heads up- this sale has been going on for quite a while (2 weeks or so). They also have ties, dress shirts and winter-wear for 75% off as well. I went last week and they only had a few suit styles on clearance (none that fit me) but tons of dress shirts. My advice- HURRY

Confirmed in Denton, TX. Went from $425 to $40 after markdown. Thanks OP, I needed a suit for upcoming post-graduation interviews.

Thanks for the info. I guess I shouldn't wait until the F&F 20% off this Sunday.

I'm not familiar with JC Penny brands. I'm looking for mens formal wear. What are the high quality names? What are the good specific items that people have bought?
I'm looking for slim cut wool pants and and a sport in 36S.
i'm also in albany, ny, and after going to JC penny tonight i was very disapointed. There were NO 75% off to be found in the suits section i need a tux or nice suit for upcoming weddings, and i was realy hoping to find some deals.
zenci said: This is YMMV. I have been to the one in Cupertino. It was at most 50% off.
dkong said: It's only 50% off at the Queens Center mall in Queens, NY.
Thanks, I was just about to check there. Perhaps it starts later on as another poster said?

I'm shocked. You went to Crossgates Mall? The sale was still going on as of Sunday, and there was a ton of stuff left.
Stores in San Antonio just went to 75% off today. I got 4 sport coats, including a $300 camel hair and two summer weight neutral plaids for $180 total with tax. The discounts are so new that they aren't even in the computer yet.
I also saw lots of outerwear and sweaters newly discounted for $9.99 and less after the 75% discount.
Green for you, OP.

In Tucson, they're having a 50% off on items that are already on Clearance for 75% off. I picked up a suit and leather jacket already myself...
Went to Gainesville, FL store yesterday. No major sale on suits. Did pick up a couple of amazing deals on sweaters ... $4.97 marked down from $42.00 but selection in their clearance sections was extremely limited.
Yesterday at the JCP at Southpark Mall in Colonial Heights, VA I picked up a decent suit AND a good looking sport coat for $116, including tax, for all 3 pieces.
Have been needing to upgrade the wardrobe a bit and this is about as painless a way as I've seen!

Just make sure you leave the RL tag on the sleeve so people know it's a RL suit.
Sorry if I am being a dud here - I see some people leaving the tag on the sleeves.... what's with that ?
