cameronj said:Good point - so is a good quality upconverting DVD player and 5 movies a good deal at $80 with rebates?
I just get the feeling that this deal is being defended by people because they like HD DVD, not because it's a good deal on its merits. You wouldn't recognize a good deal if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a harpsichord singing "good deals are here". Now go back to your rootkit-infested computer and leave deal discussion to the big boys. I paid $200 some years ago for my Oppo and the A3 is definitely a better player. Halfwits like you are welcome to $400 players, region coding, anal DRM and dealing with Sony, a company that thinks that no trick is dirty enough to be played on people who buy their crap. Sony used to be a great innovative company, and unfortunately now it's sunk to the level of Microsoft or worse. I'm saying this as someone who has spent some years in Japan on Sony's money and has personally met Morita. Those were the days... Looking around my house, I don't see many Sony products, just a bunch of movies. |

Massive numbers in stock at the Sunnyvale location. Not a surprise since people here tend to know more about technology. |

If Microsoft or Nintendo have any sense they will license their hardware to third party BlueRay player makers so that you can by a 360+BlueRay or Wii+BlueRay device. |

OMG this is an awesome deal. I may go see if my local Costco has two. One for me for a back up, and one for my parents. Yea, I have a PS3, but also 2 A-3's And even tho I have had the PS3 since Nov of 06, and HD only since Oct to '07, I have more HD movies and buying on all these sales. No it is not about HD or BD, it is about good deals. Why pay MORE is many cases for SD when you can get the HD that is better quality?? As for my parents, this would make an excellent up converting player. I can easily compare SD on my PS3 and A-3. The PS3 is good, but I prefer the A-3, right now anyway. Future FW upgrades could improve the PS3. Also compared the A-3 to my old Bravo D1. An awesome but finicky player. It was just to close to tell. But then the D1 would not play about about every 3rd title I put in. Great find OP...crosses fingers that Costco has them.

Those of you who bought this at Costco in the post couple of days, please post if you got the 2 Bourne movies, or 300 and 1 Bourne movie. I got 2 Bourne, no more units with 300 at my local Costco. If there's hope there are still units out there with 300, I'll look in another Costco to pickup a second unit. Thanks! |

Don't forget going to market with a non-finalized, un-upgradeable spec. That's the one that gets me the most. |

cyberdentist said:Its ridiculous that people are buying HD-DVD player to use it for upconverting..
Here are 4 reasons to go with Philips:
1) Divx 2) USB 3) Very fast loading - HD-DVD players take their own sweet time to initialize and it sucks 4) Region Free !!!!!!
I have HD-A3 & Philips 5982 and trust me.. 5982 is equally good in upconverting plus all the above benefits !!!
move on ppl.. dont get tempted to buy this player and then it becomes a door stop after a year !!! I don't have a HD-DVD but have the Philips so I'll comment on this. Only 2 of the 4 is really of any value. DivX = Great, Region Free - Good USB bandwidth has issues when playing high res movies and don't reconize/work with some of my passport drives. Philips still suck on loading...when you turn on, even with no disk, takes about 5 secs to open the stinking tray. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with using this as a extra DVD player that can upconvert + a few movies thrown in. Main issue (why most of us is here in FW) is the price point. If this drops a few more bucks down to around $50-60, it'll be flying out of the dumpsters. |

I may be mistaken, but Costco 'usually' adjusts prices monthly..so this decrease should last a month, before possibly getting lowered even more ($59.99 would be sweet!)...the problem is, I think most Costco's will be outta stock by that point in time, save a few near the shipping ports on Oakland/Alameda (Sunnyvale,EssEff,etc.). I've been burned by OOS while waiting for lower $$ at Costco before. I'll spring for the $79.99 now, and use their 30-day price-difference IF is gets adjusted lower in that time..better safe than sorry. |

Thanks! The Costco in Dallas had both 300/bourne and bourne/bourne as of yesterday. |

I know that this is a good deal and all. I wonder how many people will be returning these to Costco next year to replace it with the next best thing that costs about $80. |
