BB Union City checked inventory and said they had 3 Seagates but couldn't find them. Typical, I'm sick of the Blue Shirts hording all the good stuff.

For those asking about RSS or "how do you get an item scanned" or just an FYI to save you from driving around everywhere.....

# Write down the SKU number :8353658 and 8004465

# Go to BestBuy and find a Blueshirt (employee).

(This step removed. Was specific to an earlier deal that led to the creation of this "guide")

# If you don't find one, ask them to check item availability on "RSS". (RSS= Ritek Smart System, it's a tool that Blueshirts use to check on stuff.)

# Give them the SKU number

# RSS results will come up and it will show the price as well as the number of units "on hand".

# If you look about midway down the right hand side of the results page, there will be a link that says "Check Other Locations". Have the Blueshirt click on that link.

# This page should show all the stores in the district and will list the number of items each store has on hand as well as the price.

# If a store shows that they have units in stock, then go to that store and repeat step 1.

# If none of the stores show any in stock, then you have probably missed out on the deal though it's always possible that RSS is wrong and some store might actually have one.

Repeat process for other SKU.

Also:

Have seen others comment about the accuracy of the "Availability" links.

Try these links instead.

Western Digital 120GB drive

Seagate 160GB drive

They are accurate (at least as far as I have been able to check).

If you get a "session expired" page, just close it and click the link again. Should work fine the second time.

In my experience that happens every time. Closing the tab or window and trying the link again in a fresh one does the trick!

Stupid question here from a laptop novice. If I want to upgrade my laptop drive, how does one do that? I know on a desktop there is plenty of room to install the new drive, copy the contents (with your favorite image tool) and then install just the new drive. Do I have to pull the laptop drive and install the old and new in a desktop and image that way?

Considering that the WD is about $70 for OEM and the Seagate is about $100 for OEM, this is a smoking deal. I guess I'll go out on another BB wild goose chase.

Thanks OP!

Got a bunch of the Seagate 160's for $28; the WD drives were still normal clearance price - southern NJ.

You can install in a desktop or get a USB Sata/IDE adapter Like this one

plug your old notebook drive into it, image the drive over to your desktop, remove and replace with new drive and image the new drive.

You probably can. Your laptop might not run the interface at full UATA speed, but a UATA drive is backwards comatible with a plain old ATA (33MHz) controller. It will just run at ATA speeds.

Picked one 160GB Ultra 160gb 5400RPM up in Westwood (Los Angeles) for 45.99. Said they had 4, but they only found one. Seems like a good deal.

Got a Seagate in NYC, Broadway Noho location. I left the other one there for a lucky soul. Top shelf in the middle, no price tag, but the blue shirt knew the price off the top of his head. How convenient...

42.99 + 3.60 tax = 46.59 otd
