Just closed what I think is a pretty great deal on a new 2008 Honda Odyssey and wanted to share my info so that you can get the same deal. I searched the web looking for the best prices that everyone else was finding and I used that to scour my region for a dealer that would work with me. I worked with dealers in Omaha and Kansas City but could not get them to come close to the $24,200 that I was hearing about in Virgina. Then, on my first email to Clay Olson at Holmes Honda in Des Moines Iowa he beat the locals and shot me his bottom dollar that undercut my locals by $700.

Here are the details
$29,595 MSRP (included here for laughs)
$24,000 quoted price (cash deal, I did not ask about loan/lien info)
$0 destination charge
$185 doc fee
==============
Out the door $24185 (taxes/title not included).

He also tossed in the mud guards and paint protection (whatever that is).

I also asked what his price would be if I wanted an EXL model (includes leather, sunroof, and variable cylinder management) and he quoted $27,000.

From what I've read, there is a $2300 manufacturer incentive program running until March 3 that is playing into the deals right now. (March 7 UPDATE: It looks like the incentives have been extended through March)

Knowing that this was a pretty sweet deal, and he was a nice enough guy to work with I asked if he would honor this price if I sent in a few friends, and he said sure. So friends, tell Clay that Mr. Krusemark sent you.

If you're not specifically interested in an Odyssey but want to research prices look into the following

Search for "Prices Paid" the forums at http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/

www.costcoauto.com was mentioned as possibly offering online prices that are better than www.CarsDirect.com and www.edmund.com (thks buymenow)

For our Sienna fans you might look for similar deals (and quality issues) at
http://www.siennaclub.org/ (thks maestroX2)

Good luck to all...and if you've found a lower price please post it in the wiki for the others to benefit from.

I MOVE that we make an attempt to stay on topic, which means this deal, this model, and reasonably well-supported claims (which likely does not include your however-illustrative anecdotes). I'll second that - OP

honda odyssey = crap
accord and civic are reliable, but Odyssey...nah

Odd-to-see

Fair comment. They have had tranny issues in the past, but I'm planning to keep my 2000 EX as a backup unit. It's been worry free for the last 8 years, 105K miles. Hopefully my new one will be as worry free too.

Based on the previous issues this unit has a 5year 60K on the tranny.

I don't have anything negative to say about the Sienna so it probably is worth looking at. Hopefully you can use these numbers to help negotiate a good deal on one of those too.

Thanks for the post.

Wouldn't the transmission be covered under the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty?

Yes, but the older warrantly was 3yr/36k miles. Honda did extend the warranty on the transmissions to 100,000 miles for certain model years that were prone to the problem. My 2000 LX never had an issue with over 95,000 miles on it. We now have a 2006 with >30,000 trouble free miles. The Odyssey is an excellent van and a great value at the OP's price.

go to costcoauto.com and get the best price online! better than CarsDirect.com and edmund.com

Out of curiosity, does the Ridgeline share the same transmission???

If you are in the market for a van, that is a great deal IMO. Personally, I hate driving a van (specially a new car for that matter), but thanks OP for bringing it up for others.

My brother got a quote with Costco and ended up going with CarsDirect because it was $2000 less for his Honda Pilot.

Thanks for the suggestion, but when I put in the 2008 EX model, it showed $26,864.24. That's the invoice price, and does not reflect the $2300 incentive. Did I miss something on the costcoauto website?

Nope, I would not wish the car sales job on anyone, especially myself. If you dig deep into the link I included on the Honda Odyssey forum you'll see that I got his name from another poster over there. But a deductive reasoner such as yourself will note that I'm not his only happy customer. Cheers.

Honda = junk.

does this include the models with VCM? that would be hot since they are the highest mileage vans in their class (excluding the Mazda5 which is a "small" minivan)

Yea the EXL that I was told he would sell for $27K has the variable cylinder management(VCM). I guess that they added a feature in 2008 that lets it shut off 2 or 3 cylinders. Prior to this year it was only able to shut off 3 cylinders at a time. We decided against it for 4 reasons.
1) we did not need the leather or sunroof in the EXL package
2) I could not cost justify spending an extra 3K to save 1 or 2 mpg.
3) My brother in law's 2007 EXL model had a faint but noticeable hum (annoying)when the extra cylinders cut out, and they would not shut down when traveling at 60mph+.
4) In Nebraska we drive at 75 a fair amount and at that speed it's not likely that it would shut down the extra cylinders anyway, so I would not likely save more than .5 mpg average.

Honda usually gives $800 to $1500 factory rebate as well as 3% hold back rebate to dealer but not advertised. So $1000+ below invoice is common price.

Under assumption - all red comes from car sales people - right?
