G51 specifications: - Total RMS power: 155 watts RMS - Satellites: 20 watts RMS x 4 (into 8 ohms, @ 1 kHz, @ 10% THD) - Center channel: 19 watts RMS (into 8 ohms, @ 1 KHz, @ 10% THD) - Subwoofer: 56 watts RMS (into 2 ohms, @ 100 Hz, @ 10% THD)
X-540 specifications: - 70 watts total amplification - 7.4 watts x 4 for front and back satellites - 15.4 watts for center channel - 25 watts for subwoofer
In my opinion, on top of the above numbers, the G51 are just plain better looking, with the control box adding some more options, gets better ratings, etc.
If you can afford the extra $32.00 for the G51s, I would (and did) go for the G51s.
By the way, the X-540s are now at $79.99 at Amazon, so Circuit City would be your best bet for the X-540s.
Thanks OP. Picked up a pair to replace my Z-680's that I used for my home theater.

Was it broken? These are no where near the level of Z-680s.
No, I originally had the Z-680s as my computer speakers, but I recently picked up a 58" plasma at which point I set them up as a cheap but decent home theater. They work great, but I've been without computer speakers for about a month. The G-51s will be on computer duty while the z-680s are on plasma duty.

Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic. My neighbor just told me he's selling his Logitech z5500 speaker system without the Control pod for $75. Is this worth it? Can I obtain a control pod elsewhere for this elsewhere cheaply? I wonder if I can use a control pod from another Logitech system with the z5500. I checked the ports and they seem to be universal.

The good news is that $75 for the Z-5500 is a good price. The really bad news is that it appears, since the control pods on the Z-5500 looks to be the first part to go bad, there does not seem to be any ready source for replacement pods, and they don't seem to be interchangeable either. Wish I had better news.

Doh! Thanks. I wish they'd put that option on more of their speakers.
Guv66 said: Is free shipping dead?Yep. I'll edit the title to reflect that, and that the rebate is expired as well.
But they have now reduced the price of the speakers, so the net increase is around $10.00 because of the expired rebate.
Here is what Amazon has to say about the shipping: "This item is not eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping; this may be due to the item's unusual shipping weight of 22.6 pounds."
clayfu said: i just got mine. Those rear cables are super short. 15 feet isn't long at all =(Could be worse! Anyway, Cable Stockroom has an inexpensive (Accck! Make that ~$17 and change shipped for 4 of them) way to extend them 25 feet.
*** EDIT ***
Just got mine, and yep, 15 feet ain't long at all. I am gonna pick up some of the 25' extensions.

Shipping to Colorado is $18.56.
The rebate expired on 02/25/2008, but they reduced(!) the price by $18.50 to $93.49, so the deal is now:
$93.49 plus $18.56 (YMMV) shipping - $20.00 for the above code, for a total of $92.05 (YMMV).
Cheapest I could find otherwise is via a click through on the above Amazon page to a Tiger Direct deal of $109.91 with free shipping, so still a ~16% savings.
Original deal was $81.99 after $10.00 Mail-in Rebate and $20.00 code from above plus free shipping, so the current deal ends up around $10.00 more because of the expired rebate.
For those who bought these speakers, the price at Amazon is reduced to US $ 93.49. I just gave a call to Amazon for price adjustment and the customer representative gave the credit back to my credit card without any questions as the price got reduced with in the acceptable time period. So here is my final price.
Item(s) Subtotal: $111.97 Shipping & Handling: $18.56 Super Saver Discount: -$18.56 Promotional Certificate: -$20.00 ----- Total Before Tax: $91.97

Code LOGITG5I still applies, but for only $12.72 off now.
Subtotal of Items: $127.24
Shipping & Handling: $18.56
Super Saver Discount -$18.56
Promotion Applied -$12.72
------ Total before tax: $114.52
Estimated Tax: $9.59
------ Total for this Order: $124.11
So, $84.11 AR and I'm charged tax as well. $74.52 AR if no tax. Rebate only lasts till tomorrow.
