Good deal. Thanks

Newegg has several rather disturbing reviews on this drive. However, please note that most of the complaints center around Samsung's HUTIL diagnostic utility; which after some investigation, this utility appears to give erroneous results of all the F1 series...in other words, use other diagnostic utilities before jumping on an RMA. There also appears to be specific complaints around the 'net that it doesn't play well with nVidia-based mobos, primary those with the 680i chipset.

With that said, this seems to be the best deal on a 750G drive with 32M cache available right now. And it's reported to be a little more quiet, runs cooler, and is just a little faster than most of the competition.

Maybe I'm overlooking it, but what the hell is the warranty on this thing?!?

I just got my new Dell from another FW thread, and it had the Samsung HD501LJ. 8 days later, and poof, dead drive. It ran just long enough to migrate my old date to it. Dell is sending me a new drive as a replacement, and I am sure all drive manufacturers aren't perfect, but I am disappointed with this Samsung. I've been very lucky in the past and never suffered a drive failure, so I guess I was due, but 8 darn days? Don't they still bench test these before sending them out? Still having mixed feelings on Dell. They quickly offered to send a new drive, but I had to call and complain to get them to overnight one. They originally said it would take 2-3 days to stage it, then they'd ship it 3 business days. After complaining, they agreed to send it overnight. Sorry for the rant.

Theres always the possibility that the drive got damaged during the shipping process. In that case, regardless of the brand, the drive would still die.

The point is, always have backups.

Anyone have any idea or a link to warranty info for this drive?

Newegg doesn't have any warranty info listed and the consumer version of Samsung's website doesn't have it. The business/global hdd section did, but the warranty section just says to RMA it to your supplier. My gut feeling is that this drive has a 3 year warranty, just like most if not all Samsung HDDs but I'd like to see actual proof of that...

It's actually buried deep in the consumer site too, can't remember where, but it's essentially a 3-year.

I purchased this drive at Newegg a couple weeks ago when it was still $149.99. Received it quickly. After formatting it, I ran a chkdisk within Vista. Everything checked out perfect. I used the Samsung 750GB as the second hard drive in a computer used primarily to record and playback television programming. Although programs recorded flawlessly on the Samsung, programs played back from the Samsung had audio glitches every few seconds. I contacted Samsung technical support. Level 1 support was clueless and could not find the model number in his system. Finally, I walked him through the Samsung web pages so he could document the problem. He referred me to Level 2 support, who spent only a minute or two before referring me to Level 3. The Level 3 technician was knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. He said I had a read-write error that is sometimes caused by bad connectors. He told me how to complete the diagnosis (switch cables between the two hard drives) and set me up for a RMA if the problem turned out to be the hard drive. The problem was confirmed to be in the hard drive and not the cables. I contacted Newegg about the problem and they said I could return it or exchange it. Normally, there is a 15% restocking fee for returned products, but this fee is waived for defective merchandise. I decided to return it and purchased instead the Western Digital Green Caviar 750GB hard drive. I received it yesterday and, so far, it is working fine.

Key messages:
1. Samsung technical support is very good (once you get past Level 1)
2. Newegg customer service is very good.
3. My Samsung F1 did not work correctly. Just because I got a bad one doesn't mean that you will also.
4. My Western Digital Green Caviar is working okay. Just because I got a good one doesn't mean that you will also.

Both hard drives (Samsung and Western Digital) were very quiet and I did not notice either one while watching television in the living room. As documented on other threads, the Samsung provides better performance and the Western Digital uses a little less energy and is a little more quiet.

I would be very careful about ordering these newly designed high density drives, as it is a FACT that either the drive and/or Samsung's low level disk diagnostic HUTIL has ERRORS with this drive.

It is very important, now and in the future, as far as RMA's, to have a working manufacturer's disk diagnostic.
Most often only the manufacturer's low level diagnostic will have the ability to even see bad blocks which have been successfully relocated. And higher level tests will not even see the number of ECCs that were required to provide bit accurate data.

Hard drives nowadays are just luck of the draw whether you will get one that last more than a year or two. Used to be that you could rely on certain makes or models for reliability, but not anymore. I have SCSI drives that are nearing 20 years old and still run fine. I wish they could figure out a way to make IDE/PATA/SATA half as reliable as SCSI.

But 750 GB for about $140 seems like a pretty good deal.

Not to mention this drive was the on top of every benchmark because of it's 333Gb/Platter size.

Can you post a link to this?

I did some Google searching a few days ago on this drive and multiple reseller sites were only quoting a 12-month warranty on this drive. I was surprised, but this immediately halted my research into the unit. If it's 3-years I'd feel a bit better about buying it. And, it really surprised me to see a hard drive with only a 12-month warranty, so I'm wondering if those reseller sites are just wrong. Anyone got confirmation on a 3-year warranty included in this unit - and can post a link to it? TIA.

20-year-old drives would hold maybe 10MB-200MB, and the 200MB's a maybe for then, pretty high end. What are you running on these, DOS 3? Now if you said you had a 20-year-old ESDI or MFM/RLL I might have been more impressed.

The F1 750GB has 250GB platters. Only the 1TB model uses 333GB platters. The Samsung also has problems with motherboards using nvidia chipsets.
