vorpel said:Can you please elaborate on how many license keys of each production you get. Specifically I'm interested in Vista Ultimate, and other posts here at FW and a few at SD seem to indicate 10 licenses per Windows OS (non-server).
Thanks!
-DCTo be technical about it, it's 10 activations using one key per application, server or OS. It's pretty comical when you realize what you are getting. You actually get 10 activations for Windows Vista Ultimate, 10 activations for Windows Vista Business, 10 activations for Vista Business N, 15 (yes, 15) activations for Windows Vista Enterprise... No, it's not a joke. It really is that good. I've had my subscription for the last year. In fact, I got in on it when they were giving it away if you purchased Microsoft Exam Insurance. When you break down the cost, I paid something like $45 for the TechNet Plus Direct subscription back then. IMO, TechNet is one of those amazing resources that few people know about and fewer still understand. Personally, even though it's more expensive, I would recommend people going and obtaining the TechNet Plus Single User subscription that comes with the monthly media mailings and not the TechNet Plus Direct subscription which is downloads only. Microsoft's servers are not the fastest things you've ever seen and the enormity of what you receive in the way of actual media makes it easily worth the extra cost (I also have a TechNet Plus subscription from work). Remember, the license is perpetual either way. The only restriction is that you're not allowed to use the software in a production environment. Don't even waste time thinking about it.... buy it. This deal is effectively the same as what I would pay if I renewed my existing subscription (Correction: It's better) |

I have regular Comcast cable internet at home and I usually see around 800KB/sec from Microsoft's servers, using the Microsoft download tool. I really don't think it is worth the extra money when I won't be using the majority of the discs, and in some cases I just use the ISO to install into a VM, so I don't even need a physical disc. Why add more waste to the environment if I don't have to? |

Just to confirm, you think it's worth the extra $150 (after coupon) to get the media instead of having to download it? TIA In my opinion, yes, I think it is worth the extra money. Happypants' comment is completely valid though. If you're interested in only one or two applications, then it's probably not worth it. But if you want to learn a lot of these Microsoft applications; if you are in the IT field and are looking to immerse yourself in a large number of these tools, then the extra money is well worth it. But again, that's just me. For me, the convenience factor is tremendous. |

When I checked this morning the code is still active BTW can somebody with an account do me a favor and check if you're able to download Windows ISO's with different language options (say Japanese or Traditional Chinese)? On an U.S. account of course. From the site it seems like you can get Vista SP1 integrated ISO's in different languages, but is that on a different TechNet subscription? Thanks in advance! |

I took advantage of this deal and my account was activated yesterday .... this is fun. I also got the download-only version. I spent a good hour or so going through the DLs queueing up everything I thought I might want, and it ended up totalling around 15gb or so. They all finished downloading overnight (Comcast Cable gave me d/l rates at 800-1000 kbps), and I'll only burn them to disc as they're needed. Definitely worth saving the $150 and not having to juggle around all those DVDs. MS's download utility is adequate (nothing mindblowing, but it queues up discs and does the job just fine) One note: Once I ordered it, the MS sales site said "order submitted", but I never got my "welcome" email. I finally called the informational number and they said it was sent and I should have it, and they gave me the activation number to link my account to my Windows Live ID. Worked like a charm. It's worth noting--if you need the software right away for some reason, if you call, they'll cut through the red tape and activate your account but quick. My question: Does anyone have a good template for labels for the burned DVDs? I can't find them anywhere. If someone who bought a physical DVD subscription would be willing to scan the disc labels at a reasonably high resolution and send me images, I'd be happy to make a printable CD label template and share. Feel free to block out any identifying numbers, etc. from the discs. -AK |

Windows 2008 launch event is also a hot deal for the free software (W2k8 enterprise w/ hyperV coupon, Visual Studio Standard, SQL 2008)!
Coupon Code: TMSAML06
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb892754.aspx Thanks for the Technet code. I must of missed it in 2008 launch kit handouts.
It should be pointed out that the license for the W2008 and SQL 2008 servers are time limited to one year. If anyone plans on using the servers longer than that they should consider the Technet subscription.
Visual Studio Standard has no time limit. VS bells and whistles features highlighted at the launch are in the Pro or Team versions. Thinking of using Windows Server 2008 as a Workstation OS for my Thinkpad laptop. Can I get this? |
