herbamatic said:aluminum, yum, isn't there research that indicates aluminum causes alzheimers? and what is that weird liner anyhow? Lexan-B? The research showed the presence of aluminum salts with alzheimers but they did not go as far as to say there was a causal relationship. Anyway, the Sigg's are lined with a non-reactive coating, so you won't get any leaching. I own 4 1L bottles and they are great. I just wish they had been on sale BEFORE now! |

The shit we get for living in 2008. Cancer this, cancer that, bad for you this, bad for you that. My grandpa grew up playing with mercury with his friends, probably slept in a room that was painted with lead paint and had asbestos for insulation, and certainly didn't give a crap about bullshitpenol whatever, and he lived to be 86.
I think we all need to take our tinfoil hats off. I hate to be a jerk, but I really find these anecdotal stories to be pointless and misleading. It's as if I said, "Well, I my grandpa smoked 2 packs/day and lived until he was 121, so cigarettes must not be that bad." Some humans win the noble prize. Others can bat .300. Others reach their peak height at 4 foot. The question isn't if your grandpa was Superman. The key is if the majority of people, in a scientific study, showed negative effects in response to a chemical. In this case, the answer from the NIH was yes. Now I know that we all encounter a bunch of other random chemicals everyday, but I'm not consciously licking the doorknob of my flu-ridden colleague nor obsessed with buying organic bananas. If you bring it my attention that cigarettes cause cancer, I may/may not choose to stop. But it's good to put information out there that appeals to the mass population, and let people make decisions based on that general information (and not my grandpa, super as he may have been). Trying to keep perspective.... |

yes, there was a story linking aluminum and alzheimer's disease. the popular (and more commonly accepted scienctific) thinking now is that aluminum is absorbed extremely poorly via the digestive system, thus making it HIGHLY unlikely that aluminum drinking containers are related to alzherimer's. the patients where aluminum and alzheimer's was linked was due to use of aluminum in dialysis machines (now they don't use aluminum in machines). it is now believed that aluminum pumped directly into the blood stream does do bad things, including leading to alzheimer's disease. hope this clears up some issues. that said, i'm in for 2x 1L bottle and 1x 1.5L bottle. |

The difference between these and a Thermos has nothing to do with the coating. A Thermos has a vacuum liner between the outside of the container and the reservoir. This acts as an insulator. These bottles don't have that. (This company does seem to sell bottles that do have a vacuum liner.) That said, I'm going to keep using my Nalgene's. Better living through chemistry. |

I think we all need to take our tinfoil hats off. Your grandfather also probably played sports outside when he was a child, probably worked a job for four decades that involved heavy physical activity, drank water that wasn't nearly as polluted and ate fish that wasn't loaded with methylmercury, meat that wasn't laced with hormones and antibiotics, and ate foods that looked nothing like the Frankenstein frozen foods section of your local supermarket today. Your grandfather lived in a time when pneumonia, polio, or tuberculosis was more likely to kill you than diabetes, heart disease, or cancer. Times are a-changin'. In other news, I've been looking for one of these...thanks. |

Thanks OP. I used to think it was nice having a case of bottled water in my truck. However, after reading a Readers Digest article about bottled water, including the environmental toll, I think I am going to get a few Sigg bottles, and put my Brita Filter to use. The link above has more of the Readers Digest article. If you buy bottled water on a regular basis you should read the rest of the article. |

RXC96 said:can you put these in the freezer, or will the water expand and bend the aluminum bottle?
a co-worker saw me putting plastic bottles in the work freezer and said I shouldn't do it because the plastic leaks or is it leaches chemicals into the ice/water? SIGG does not recommend placing them in the freezer. |

Think about it: water when freezing expands in the relation 10:11. If the bottle is full enough it will likely cause permanent deformation of the bottle. I don't think putting plastic bottles into the freezer is anywhere near as critical as heating them up, i.e. in the microwave, considering the slowdown of most chemical processes in lower temperatures. |

I've been needing a couple of bottles, so I went to my local REI to check these out. I opened up a few of them on the shelf and they *stank* like drying paint and petroleum. Inert... yeah sure. No leaching 100% safe mystery liner. Ended up buying a stainless one that was stink-free. |

I've used a few SIGG bottles over the years, as well as a ton of Nalgene bottles (before all this Nalgene/Lexan freakout happened). Personally, I hate SIGG bottles. They claim the water doesn't take on any metallic flavor from the bottle but I feel like it does (must be psychological), AND I hate not being able to see what I'm drinking and the bottles are hard to clean since you cant see into them! You can buy cleaning tablets for the SIGGs but sheesh, high-maintenance! I will be using my Nalgenes forever |

Some design/color have super saver/prime, i.e. shipped by Amazon. Most of the Sigg bottles on Amazon are sold by 3rd party, however. olouie said:PeteyNice said:I am not sure how much of a deal this is. thanks, I bought four Siggs for my family last year and needed to replace some tops, also I hear the new thermos are supposed to be good; I'm hoping "leakproof" means that, really! Blessings and thanks! |
