Hoo boy.

Haven't done a hot deal in the main forum in a while.

Hopefully I'll be spared the flames.

Credit goes to cybernaut over at zoolert where I snagged this from. I haven't seen it on any of the "bigger" places yet.

Microcenter has the D-Link DNS 323 on sale for $159.99 here :

DNS-323 at Microcenter

There is also a rebate for $40 here :

Microcenter DNS-323 Rebate

Brings the total to 119.99 after the rebate + tax and shipping. If you have a microcenter near by, you can pick it up for free.

This is a nice NAS unit - I have it myself.. It's hackable. You can throw telnet, firefly, lighthttpd... Even a full blow debian distro. And you don't mess with too much to do it! The box looks for a "fun_plug" script at the end of its boot process. Upload some of the example fun_plug scripts out on the DNS 323 Wiki, and reboot. Viola! Easy stuff. It's as simple as ftping the stuff over to the primary drive...

Anyway - this is a great price. A little work with a rebate, but well worth it. This is a great NAS for this price. Linux.. Gig interface.. Not crippled like the WD products.. It's not exactly the same as a $600 NAS, but what is?

WARNING: D-Link Rebates YMMV. Reports of legitimate rebate claims being rejected (see discussion below).

I got this the last time Microcenter had the same deal 2 months ago. Very good deal. Scary simple to set up and so far has worked like a dream. I don't have a clue what I'm doing but was able to set this up with RAID1 and 2 1TB drives in 10 minutes.

UPDATE!!! They REJECTED MY REBATE. I sent in everything to D-LINK -- UPC, Receipt, etc., but they said they only received a rebate form with no supporting materials. What's worse is that they were difficult about it on the phone. I am faxing in my appeal but based on this interaction I have very low expectations. There are some companies that use rebates and appear eager to pay out legitimate claims. There are other companies that use rebates and appear eager to reject claims for any reason they can muster, whether or not you can prove that you bought their product. BOO D-LINK!!!

Grr! There is one store in the middle of Long Island, NY and b/c of that they are tacking on 13.90 Sales Tax in addition to the $5.99 standard shipping.

Still a good deal even without the rebate.

I guess that's my problem, I'm expecting somebody to come out with a $600 NAS for a cool price of like $79.95...why hasn't anybody managed to pull off that stunt yet?

We are one in the same, hudster.

I finally bit the bullet with the dns-323 though... It was the best option at the < $200 range.. And at 119, I couldn't resist.

Anyone know what version of Samba this runs?

Here is the link for the original thread from a month or so ago.

There is a lot of info in there about what this can do and answers a lot of questions that are sure to be asked.

By the time you add the hard drives, you are over half way there to $600.

Yes, but at least you can select your own drives, with up to 5 year warranty, rather than the junk often included in the $600 device.

What additional great stuff we can do from a file server, other than serving files? I have WD 160 which I want to replace due to speed.
