The ethernet jack for firmware upgrades is promising.

seems like a good price for a BD player. At this point there's no assurances that it will be upgradeable even with the ethernet port. Who knows.

In for one. Thanks OP!
The cheapest shipping is $16 for me.
I also bought a HDMI cable from the store for $5+.

That's a great price, but this is not a great Blu-Ray player. Read the review on cnet.com about incompatibilities with various Blu-Ray discs.

Totally agree. Finding the fact that the new firmware upgrade enables this player to output bitstream via HDMI, I almost jumped on it but found many problem mentioned on AVS forums. I will keep my Panny BD30.

It seems I am the only fool.
Whatever.

Are you sure this particular unit will bitstream advanced audio codecs with a firmware update? I know the 1400 does but I didn't think this particular one did. I do think it bitstreams regular DD and DTS, just not DTS-MA HD and DD+/TrueHD.

FWIW, this is a particularly horrible model, and was the first blu-ray player ever made, along with Sony's first model. I suppose it was great when it came out, but now there are much better options (albeit more expensive ones). I would save up a little more and pony up for a better, more reliable model.

$100 more get a refurb PS3 that actually plays blurays

Just curious, where can you get a refurb ps3 for $275?

OOS.

try eBay.

PS3's are going for signigicantly more than $275, especially when you include shipping. Honestly you're better off buying a new 40GB than buy one off eBay.

I had one of these players, ran really well for a while.
The bitstream out of the player is 48k with no firmware upgrade path to the different BD Specs
Good find OP!

Just to throw in at least one positive remark about this player in the midst of the negatives (not that I'm recommending this player): This player did receive high marks on DVD Benchmark because it has the Reon HQV processor. Search for Samsung's players and you'll see this one is at the top for what they've reviewed. AFAIK, this is not Samsung's first higher-end BD player (the BD-P1000 was), and is better than that one by milestones.

However due to the problems listed above and in AVS forums, I would weigh the pros and cons and really think about it before jumping. This could probably serve as a very high-end upconverting player up there with the Oppos.
