About $100 off regular price...but smaller harddrive then and only 6 cell battery which offsets that. I would wait if you don't need it right away.
For background this config (including the 8400) with 9 cell, 160gb harddrive and intel wireless is usually $599 from Dell SB.

I bought it around 2 weeks back, similar config but HDD was 160 GB and price was $449.
So I would say WAIT if you can.

Anyone else notice for the OS choice, there are some blank spaces? I am actually interested in the Vista option. I don't want to be going down with the XP sinking ship because I am giving the laptop to someone less computer literate...
Good deal on the base model . . . video card and 2gb ram make it ready for Vista . . . but if you want to trick it out, wait for another $500 off $1250 (or other) deal.

Another link posted at SD drops the price for the same configuartion to $484. I may go for it now!! Combined with FatCash and my 5% card, it is not a bad deal. I hate missing the $449 Vostro 2 weeks ago.
Why is the option to switch to Vista show no description? I would like to order it with Vista home.
I was really lucky and picked up this laptop for $399 last month - my thoughts:
Wait for a deal with a 9-cell battery. I was able to watch two full movies flying yesterday (1080p rips off the hard drive). Very bulky laptop. Not for the person doing lots of traveling MediaDirect is lame Ubuntu Linux needs special work to get wireless going, still haven't got sound working or Compiz (might be because I'm a noob) - I have Intel graphics, so NVIDIA might work better Hard drive is easy to swap out. I have a WD Passport 250GB installed from one of the Best Buy deals.
If anyone wants to trade XP Home for Vista Home Basic (which is what I have) - I'll be happy to trade stickers (not a fan of Vista)

At least Vista will be supported longer into the future. WinXP has a much shorter lifeline. Anyone not willing to adopt Vista is short-sighted...
Either one of two things will happen. Either a year from now you'll finally be ready for Vista and have to pay for an upgrade or 3 or 4 years from now you'll be stuck with your Windows XP machine while the rest of the world has moved on.
Especially now that Service Pack 1 is out, why would anyone go with software that's already in the process of phasing out? Sure you can still buy a brand new machine with Windows XP, but you can also still buy a brand new dot matrix (aka "impact") printer. Because it's better? No. It's simply because of reluctance to upgrade.
Maybe you'll be ready to upgrade to Vista by the time the next Windows OS comes out.
Sorry, my rant is done. I just get tired of hearing all the complaints about Vista. Even running 64-bit Vista for a year, my biggest beef was video codec incompatibility... and that wasn't even a Vista thing. That was just a 64-bit thing.

Add/append the following varible string to the end of the URL link without adding any extra spaces: &m_11=VHMBAS
So the URL link would be as follows: http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS
----------------- To get an additional 3% off, about $15, through partner direct, change the varible string &cs=04 <from> &cs=04 <to> &cs=45
Vista Link: http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS
Vista & Partner Direct Link, save 3%, save 15 http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=45&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS
One caveat, when using partner direct, note that Dell increases the estimated shipping date by 2 days however.
Thanks Sardarji ! Do you think we can get FatCash via this link?

Getting more OS Options: ------------------------------- Add/append the following varible string to the end of the URL link without adding any extra spaces: &m_11=VHMBAS
So the URL link would be as follows: http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

Vista Link: http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS
Vista & Partner Direct Link, save 3%, save about $15 http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=45&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS
One caveat, when using partner direct, note that Dell increases the estimated shipping date by 2 days however.
To use the other options do the following: - open firefox, go to link, go to OS - <right click>, View Page Info, Form Tab, Select CONFIG_FORM Notice all the possible varibles for the configuration module 11( m_11 ) which is for the OS &m_11=XPHOME &m_11=XPPRO &m_11=VHMBAS &m_11=VHMPREM &m_11=VBUS &m_11=VULT &m_11=X3VBNME &m_11=X3VUNME -Now just append only one of the above including "&" to the end of the URL So what you now will get is the following, (I've included it with Partner Direct 3% off)
Using the link for Vista home basic just changes the default option on the OS page to the blank vista option. I am not sure if that will work or not!!
The specs show as follows:
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5270 (1.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) OPERATING SYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE Microsoft® Works 9. Not hot. I bought the Vostro1500 a few weeks back. It was $499 with 160GB HD. The rest components have the same configuration. I added the webcam for an extra $30. $530 total with same config and 160GB and webcam.

Are you sure the one you got has 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Video Card? If yes, then I agree with you that today's deal is not as hot as the one you have.

Umm, so? You will still be able to run all of the latest software, and Microsoft has confirmed that they will provide extended support for Windows XP for at least the next 3 years - so who really cares what anyone else is running?

Wrong. People don't like to upgrade to Vista because it's slow, buggy and bloated. I should know, because I've been dealing with it for over a year. I do enterprise level support at American Express, and while we haven't rolled out Vista yet, I have been involved in testing it - and the bugs have been absurd. When it works, it works fine - but when it doesn't, it's garbage. We have only tested it on brand new, high end machines - and even on machines that have ZERO AMEX custom apps, there are still multiple complaints and problems from the executives that have been given standards exceptions to be able to use it.
Bottom line: If it works for you, great. But if you can't understand that many people have had severe compatibility and stability issues with it, then that's unfortunate. As for myself, I actually use Vista at home - despite the fact that it took over a year of patching for it to finally become stable. And even now, I still have problems with the LATEST version of Java crashing IE7. It works fine in Firefox, but for some reason IE can't stand it when I open 20+ windows. (As a developer, I always open 20+ windows in my browser. Has always worked fine in XP, as well as Firefox, so it's not an absurd concept.)

Well, your one of the lucky ones. Fact is, many of us 'Power Users' who have ALWAYS upgraded to the latest and greatest OS immediately have been extremely frustrated by Vista. It's simply a bloated mess with very little compelling reason to upgrade over XP, which is stable and fast. Don't believe me? Read the editorial from Jim Louderback, Editor on Chief of PC Magazine - and what his real opinion of Vista is after he stepped down as Editor and could finally give his real opinion on Vista: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2171472,00.asp
The only real compelling feature of Vista is DirectX 10. So if you are a high end PC gamer then you may have to use Vista - but even that's up for debate after people discovered a hack that enabled the very high settings in Crysis make it look almost identical in XP to the DX10 version in Vista made it seem like the benefits of DX10 were overrated to say the least:
The simple fact is that Vista is a fiasco for Microsoft. Yes, it works - but it is not a compelling upgrade, and for many it's benefits do not outweigh all of the negatives. Personally, I am looking forward to Windows 7, which should be out in a year or so. Hopefully, that OS will be a bit less of a headache.

This was a great deal that lasted only a couple of hours. I bought 2 myself:
I am trying to purchase the laptop using the partner direct discount, but the giftcard option is not showing up and Dell is closed to speak to customer service. anyone have any ideas?

No. With the 500 off 1250 deal a few weeks ago. That amount of money would have gotten you a T9500, XP pro and everything else you have there.
