About $100 off regular price...but smaller harddrive then and only 6 cell battery which offsets that. I would wait if you don't need it right away.

For background this config (including the 8400) with 9 cell, 160gb harddrive and intel wireless is usually $599 from Dell SB.

alert mods

I bought it around 2 weeks back, similar config but HDD was 160 GB and price was $449.

So I would say WAIT if you can.

alert mods

Anyone else notice for the OS choice, there are some blank spaces?
I am actually interested in the Vista option.
I don't want to be going down with the XP sinking ship because I am giving the laptop to someone less computer literate...

Good deal on the base model . . . video card and 2gb ram make it ready for Vista . . . but if you want to trick it out, wait for another $500 off $1250 (or other) deal.

are you referring to the 9cell to 6 cell subtract $150 deal ? i'm not sure how often this kind of glitch occurs.....

not often enough, that's for sure.

I wonder .. can you pull out the nVidia 8400m vid card and run this with onboard graphics?

Another link posted at SD drops the price for the same configuartion to $484. I may go for it now!! Combined with FatCash and my 5% card, it is not a bad deal. I hate missing the $449 Vostro 2 weeks ago.

Why is the option to switch to Vista show no description? I would like to order it with Vista home.

alert mods

where is the $484 link?

I was really lucky and picked up this laptop for $399 last month - my thoughts:

Wait for a deal with a 9-cell battery. I was able to watch two full movies flying yesterday (1080p rips off the hard drive).
Very bulky laptop. Not for the person doing lots of traveling
MediaDirect is lame
Ubuntu Linux needs special work to get wireless going, still haven't got sound working or Compiz (might be because I'm a noob) - I have Intel graphics, so NVIDIA might work better
Hard drive is easy to swap out. I have a WD Passport 250GB installed from one of the Best Buy deals.

If anyone wants to trade XP Home for Vista Home Basic (which is what I have) - I'll be happy to trade stickers (not a fan of Vista)

and Vista is NOT a sinking ship?

At least Vista will be supported longer into the future. WinXP has a much shorter lifeline. Anyone not willing to adopt Vista is short-sighted...

Either one of two things will happen. Either a year from now you'll finally be ready for Vista and have to pay for an upgrade or 3 or 4 years from now you'll be stuck with your Windows XP machine while the rest of the world has moved on.

Especially now that Service Pack 1 is out, why would anyone go with software that's already in the process of phasing out? Sure you can still buy a brand new machine with Windows XP, but you can also still buy a brand new dot matrix (aka "impact") printer. Because it's better? No. It's simply because of reluctance to upgrade.

Maybe you'll be ready to upgrade to Vista by the time the next Windows OS comes out.

Sorry, my rant is done. I just get tired of hearing all the complaints about Vista. Even running 64-bit Vista for a year, my biggest beef was video codec incompatibility... and that wasn't even a Vista thing. That was just a 64-bit thing.

Add/append the following varible string to the end of the URL link without adding any extra spaces:
&m_11=VHMBAS

So the URL link would be as follows:
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

-----------------
To get an additional 3% off, about $15, through partner direct, change the varible string &cs=04
<from>
&cs=04
<to>
&cs=45

Vista Link:
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

Vista & Partner Direct Link, save 3%, save 15
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=45&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

One caveat, when using partner direct, note that Dell increases the estimated shipping date by 2 days however.

PS: to save more use DPA and also maybe FatCash

Getting more OS Options:
-------------------------------
Add/append the following varible string to the end of the URL link without adding any extra spaces:
&m_11=VHMBAS

So the URL link would be as follows:
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

-----------------
To get an additional 3% off, about $15, through partner direct, change the varible string &cs=04
<from>
&cs=04
<to>
&cs=45

Vista Link:
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

Vista & Partner Direct Link, save 3%, save about $15
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=45&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=VHMBAS

One caveat, when using partner direct, note that Dell increases the estimated shipping date by 2 days however.

To use the other options do the following:
- open firefox, go to link, go to OS
- <right click>, View Page Info, Form Tab, Select CONFIG_FORM
Notice all the possible varibles for the configuration module 11( m_11 ) which is for the OS
&m_11=XPHOME
&m_11=XPPRO
&m_11=VHMBAS
&m_11=VHMPREM
&m_11=VBUS
&m_11=VULT
&m_11=X3VBNME
&m_11=X3VUNME
-Now just append only one of the above including "&" to the end of the URL
So what you now will get is the following, (I've included it with Partner Direct 3% off)

XPHOME
http://configure.us.Dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=45&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqdeklk&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374&m_11=XPHOME

XPPRO

VULT
