Different from last year: "starting this May, you can visit your favorite museum for free on the first weekend of every month". Not the whole May 2008, but perhaps better.
Starting this May, you can visit your favorite museum for free on the first weekend of every month. With over 70 museums nationwide, there’s one near you. So check back soon–new program details will be available by the end of April.
And before I see anyone complaining, 2 of the best NY museums (the Metropolitan and the Natural History) only have a "suggested" ticket anyway, so you don't need any promotion for them. In any event, thanks OP!

While this is the case, I've had a few friends who have been harassed to make some payment (the staff even specified a preferred minimum)...
thanks for the headsup. my credit card still says mbna but that is now boa. (assuming the museum staff knows that)
now i can visit the museum of modern art again in new york which became too expensive ($20) when they reopened.

Hello? From that list, representing 10 states in the northeast plus California? Perhaps they should change their name to Bank of Perks for New England and California.

Yourself and one guest. You have to show a Bank of America or MBNA credit or debit card.
The list of museums for this year hasn't been announced yet, but it will probably include a good selection on the east and west coasts.

From what I remember, admissions to MOMA (on 53rd St) on Friday evenings have been free since a couple years ago, if that is the one you're referring to... http://www.moma.org/visit_moma/admissions.html
"Admission is free for all visitors during Target Free Friday Nights, sponsored by Target, every Friday evening, 4:00–8:00 p.m."

I highly recommend the De Young in San Francisco. That place is awesome. San Francisco also has free museum visit events but I can't remember the specifics on it.
While YMMV, I encourage everyone to check out the website of their local library. I'm in Eastern Mass and my local library offers either free passes or discount passes to many area museums.

Yes, the admission guidelines say that you must pay something though the posted amount is only a suggestion. I only give them a dollar per person and they never flinch. Friends of mine sometimes give the clerks only $0.25 and occasionally that stumps the person because they have to figure out how to divide that amount by the number of guests (2-3 always). And I'm not joking about that.
thanks OP, I'm in for the free museums again this year, same as last year.

On MOMA's website it states that tickets for the Target Friday museum entrance are not available in advance. Does one need to get tickets at a Target - or is it simply free admission to anyone on Fridays from 4 - 8 PM? Thanks.

You just show up and stand in line for the free tickets. I did it when I was in NYC in late Feb. Didn't take long to get in then, but YMMV.

Glad to see this back. Me and my family used it last year on vacation in California. It was really fantastic.
I'm enjoying all the museum talk, but does anyone have a recommendation to get in on this if one is not a BOA banking or credit customer? I browsed their site, and they don't offer gift/prepaid cards, their secured card is $29 /annually. How can we take advantage of this offer? Any suggestions?
