back to $119....
Keep in a Temp Wish List, and check often - the price seems to be going up and down.
It's now back to 119.99
freak of nature does anyone know how many reserved sectors this has?
is it like a 700gb drive with 40gb marked off?
I think its two 320GB platters. New series. Should be a 960 using the same platters, except for three of them, coming along shortly.

Would like to know what utility program can reveal these. Even better, if it is able to convert them into useful space.
all hard drives have bad sectors and predictable failure rate.
so you take a 750gb drive and carve off 110gb for bad sectors out of the door and reserve sectors so it doesn't run out of remap's before the warranty. there is no such thing as a hard drive without bad sectors these days. they are just binned into how many etc.
even SSD has bad sectors (SD)
D'oh you're right. So for the user the spare region should only be managed at the on-board hw/fw level. I still believe such a utility exists, though, it would be exclusive to the manufacturer's lab for diagnosis purposes. Somehow, my geek nature wishes for a leak of such a cool utility...
The drive has returned to $109.99 with free shipping! I just ordered 2 of them for $219.98 with free ups 3 day guaranteed shipping. The actual shipping time for my home address is actually 1 day according to the order receipt since it is being shipped from a warehouse located on the East Coast. Awesome deal! Go get them while the price is hot again!

Still at $109.99, it seems to go up and down.
Right now, this is the cheapest WD SATA hard drive price per GB for sale at Newegg. It works out to $0.1719 per GB. There is a 750GB drive that is close, but if you start delving into the tech reviews, this drive has a lot going for it. I agree with an earlier poster, when they come out with the 960GB version of this drive, it will be great. I haven't read a firm ETA yet.
If density per drive isn't your top concern and cost is, this is a good option.
I have been torn between the 500GB and the 640GB models recently. I've been sucked into the whole 2 platter design scene. Seeing as I have two 250gb 2 platter drives already (2500aaks) and two 200gb 3 platter drives (2500jb, ide, time to upgrade these to sata) i decided to stay with the 2 platter design for my box and go with the 640's and pay the extra $40 to get the extra 200GB of space and better overall performance over two 500's. I can't imagine a 2 platter 1TB drive, but it will happen some day. I don't know why WD never upgraded their raptors to either SATA-II, anything larger than 150GB or both in the past few years. This 640GB is a definite rival to the raptors and costs alot less per GB. The price of $109.99 definitely cannot be beat at this time. The second closest is around $130 and up. They seem to like flirting with the discounts every other day, lol.

I received my drive and am very happy with it.
It is very quiet, cool, and boots my Win XP Pro noticeably faster than a 2 year old Seagate 320GB drive. Of course the double space is great too!
As of this posting time, it is still $109.99 at Newegg.
Price drop, now $100 shipped.
great drive for $100
Got mine today, just wanted to confirm that this just comes sealed in an antistaic bag?!? no manual, cd, or cables?
Seems a bit odd.
Also not very well packed as many reviews have stated. poorly wrapped and taped up in some bubble wrap it settles to the bottom of the box (and I had to cut it out of the wrap with an xacto). I don't know how sensitive drives are to getting knocked around though. (i'm just bitter cause I paid $115)
Also what's the best way to partition this for an XP installation (I'll have an old 80gb drive to hopefully use as a backup) off topic so maybe pm me you charitable sages

A few points. I wouldn't worry about the condition you received your drive. The drive heads are parked in a safe zone while powered off. I am not saying we should play hockey with it as a puck. Newegg will cover you if it there is shipping damage and other things (like my bonehead use of an old utility that killed 2 Hitachi 320 GB'ers).
Live chat Customer Service and most likely they will refund you the difference. Just be courteous. Good luck on this. Unless you are super neat, I would just start with a fresh OS install and have the OS (and maybe apps) in C:. I like my OS partition to be very small. From 4-10 GB depending on the target use of that PC. Please note I strip my install OS bare to nothing but a pair of socks.
I use the all mighty program call Acronis. You can use it to partition, create images, recovery, format and clone your original HD to this new one. It makes the job easy and fast. A must have.
whiteboi - Thanks alot, I have to set the computer up this weekend so I needed advice fast.
Just to clarify your recommending (using Acronis) to make a 10GB partition for the OS and then I can image that to a back up drive while its fresh and undamaged (to be restored as necessary). Can I back up the OS to another partition on the same drive as well? I am new to SATA drives.

You can backup any image to any partition/drive/device. The way I do it is I backup to my D: and a 2nd copy to an external device (like another HD). You can also perform incremental backups so only changes will be amended to keep the images smaller.
