Sennheiser HD650 Stereo Headphone $329 FS @J&R Archived From: Hot Deals |
Good find OP.
EDIT: People here are way too sensitive to any comment about the product.
Good price! HD650 requires better headphone ampilifier(which will cost much more than this headphone itself) to get better-than-$15-earplug sound quality. if you are not already for amp, this deal do no good to u.
if I had only hd 580, i would jump on this deal without hesitating.
HD600 amazn has the best price of $300. considering upgrade HD650 cable, it comes out similar price as $329.
HD600 vs. HD650, it depends on your personal preference, taste of music and quality of your headphone amplifier.
Green for you OP
Excellent deal. I'm looking for a good set of headphones as well. However, I have 2 problems: I don't want to buy an amp. Also, I have big ears and wear glasses, so I need cans that is comfortable and won't cause my ears to go num. (I.e. phones that completely cover the ears won't do unless they're way oversize! Any ideas?

It has oversize earcups comfy is not an issue but no amp IS. Without amp, even Senn HD595 sounds better.
Zachmo said:Good find OP, but I personally could never justify spending $330 for a pair of headphones. I'm still satisfied with my cheap $15 earplugs for my Zune and I just don't have a sound system worthy of these headphones. I'm just not an audiophile and wouldn't have any real reason to purchase these. But again, it seems to be a good price, considering the regular amount you'd have to pay.
If you're not an audiophile then why are you commenting on an audiophile set of headphones? I'm glad you're fine with the cheapo headphones that came with your Zune, but you probably also don't rip your music at 256mbps+ and probably don't listen to music for the details that some of the rest of us do. For each their own, but why interject to compare apples to oranges? That's like jumping into a car debate and saying "I could personally never justify spending $20k on a car when my $100 bike eventually gets me where I need to go."
I've got the HD595's and they are excellent, so anecdotally, the 650's must be just amazing.
When I first got the 595's, I had mixed feelings about the open design, but having had them for 6-or-so months now, I can tell you that even though they let in ambient sound from the area (my office, in this case), the sound they put out is so clear that I can easily focus on the music over the "noise" around me.
Just my $0.02.

Calm down, all I did was say thanks but no thanks.
You're reading into my post too much. All I did was thank the OP for his find, even though it's not something I would buy. Given the retail price and the price the OP found, I can understand why people would like this deal. All I said after that is that it's not a deal I would jump on. I'm not saying it's a bad deal in any way.
EDIT: Thanks for your obnoxious reaction to a comment on the product, NOT the deal itself. I went ahead and edited my original post just to make you happy, God forbid I somehow upset anyone here...
it's true, you pay more but gain less back when the price is over $100 for headphone. audiophile itself is against FW spirit "pay less and get more" ![]()
Buy a CMOY amplifier to go with these. CMOYs are homemade amplifiers, you can build them yourself but it's easier just to go and buy one. You can get them for about $50 on eBay last I checked. You NEED an amplifier and you'll love the result. You don't need to spend $500 for a commercial one.
cmoy with a hd650. lol.
if you're willing to spend 300+ on headphones, you better be willing to spend more than $25-50 on a cmoy that can't power them properly.

He's right.
I got Denon D2000s a month ago at Buy.com for $205 shipped, might be even less now, I haven't checked. Now that's a great deal, if anyone's interested. These Denons are awesome and don't need much to drive them.
You might know something I don't, but last I checked commercial amps for headphones were crazy expensive. Significantly more expensive than the headphones themselves. A cmoy will do the job. Maybe not as well but a hell of a lot cheaper. Though I will admit that if you're spending $300 for headphones, you may not be all too sensitive about the price of the amp.
Read the threads on Head-Fi forums. eBay and Audiogon are a good place to get amps. The XM4 amp for ~$130 looks great if you want one new, especially considering the op-amp is socketed and easily changed if you like tweaking.

While a cmoy will do the job, you will likely get better results even from low end desktop amps.
My personal favorite, a nice combo of cost and quality are the Little Dot Tube Amps (example)
They get excellent reviews, especially considering the bang for your buck.
I have the older Little Dot II+ with Sennheiser HD580 (modded into HD600) and it sounds superb.
has anyone compared these to the cheaper AKG K701s that i have my eye on?

second to Little Dot III+, great entry-level tube amp.
You have to spend on a amp, but, how much is very much up to you and your budget.
I use a presonic HP4 amp that I bought for $100 with my HD600. It powers the head phones adequately enough.
