A question for anyone who can help - my nuvi 350 is almost a year old, never registered with Garmin. If I register now there is no guarantee I will get the update since they are using "Date First Satellite Acquired" field.

To circumvent that would a reset of the unit reset the "Date First Satellite Acquired" field and perhaps make me eligible for the free upgrade?

Do you have it set for "fastest route" or "shortest route" ? Fastest should route you on the highways and freeways rather than surface streets. Also on the custom avoids page make you so do not have highways or other fast road types set to avoid.

I would not think this will work. I would assume the first sat date is set someplace where the user can't get at it or change it - even with a complete reset. What is likely to happen is that the first date will be wrong as mine was, so you will have to provide a receipt as proof of purchase to get the free update. It is also possible your GPS is too old to even have the first date technology in it and if so you should be able to get the free update.

Dennis

Hello Dennis, appreciate your response.

- I have tried "Fastest", "Shortest" and all options but my Nuvi is just shy of any highways/freeways. I purposely start driving on the highways and then turn it on for direction, guess what even then it makes me take the first exit and routes me thru side streets, kinda funny I'm currently on 2008 maps.

I however was not aware of the "avoids" page, time to read up the user manual and check the settings on that.

- Agree on the update, I might be lucky to get it, or the way Garmin has the update allow feature set up, if the system can't read date satellite first acquired from the unit, perhaps it will deny the update and ask us to send copy of receipt in, in which case I'm screwed LOL

Why can't Mr. Buffet or Gates donate some money to the "Free Map Updates for the Cheapskates from FW" project?

I have a question. I downloaded NT 2009 map already, but I just realized that I could temporarily use it for a month. If I do not want to buy NT 2009 map, does my nuvi350 still have original map (NT 2006)? Or I have to download NT 2006 map. I am very new about GPS.

Thank you so much.

PP

I did all of the changes that is on the device that i know of.The avoidances, the various vehicles or pedestrian mode, and also faster or shorter distances.I tried different combinations of them all, but still doesn't perform a route that i would like to take. I just assumed it would have a main route option. It seems that they should make it to where when you zoom in or out a person could just touch a particular road and it would recalculate and include this to arrive at your final destination. The via point is not what i'm talking about.
It is still better than nothing, but i feel i have to use internet and paper maps to be my main source and the nuvi as a help but not a cure all.As one review stated,"It is best when your lost".
Do any other Garmin models have a main route option or equivalent?

Follow the instructions precisely, or read the comments here (http://www.mininova.org/com/1295289) before you embark on this journey.

It worked for me and my Garmin 360, but I won't vouch for it.

Man, mine is bought Black Friday, and it won't do the 2009 Update for FREE!

I may resort to this, as long as it has No virus, etc!

I called customer support asking why I couldn't get an update (I bought a refurb Nuvi 650 from eBay two days ago). They said I should be able to get an update, until they found out my GPS was turned on a year ago. I told them I just bought it, so they asked me to send them a receipt, and then they'll change the date. That seemed pretty fair. Now all I have to do is to email my eBay seller to request for a receipt

Is the seller you bought your unit from, is by any chance "tomfowler46" ?

No, actually I didn't see his listings until after I bought the item from madups2000375a. It's ~$10 more, but it already has the 2009 maps preloaded onto the GPS. With the 20% CashBack going on at that time, it would've only been ~$7. Downloading + installing the 2009 maps is such a pain... definitely not worth saving $7.

Wait, so you downloaded a trial version? I think it means you have a months to install the file to your GPS - but you can use the maps forever. I swapped the maps of my Nuvi 650 from 2008 to 2009. I still have the 2008 map backup on my computer, just in case something goes wrong with the new maps. I'm gonna call Garmin Monday and ask what I could/should delete, because the maps also installed ~4GB of stuff on my computer!

To owners of the Nuvi 200, did you have to use a separate SD card to fit the North America NT 2009? It says I don't have enough room (already deleted the old map off device, but am short about 125mb)...

When I did the upgrade I deleted a bunch of languages. As I recall there were 2 folders for each. I don't think that I'll ever use more than English,

That's true you need a SD card or an adapter with at least 1GB.

Garmin has absolutely no way of knowing when you bought your system if you have haven't registered your GPS unit. So if you want the update, go to Garmin's website and register it and put any date after March 1st and then it'll let you download the update for free. Now, obviously if you have a GPS w/ any maps older than 2008, they'll probably know you're lying but if you have 2008 maps, you're good to go. Flame away people.

Last night Vonage Customer care guy also mentioned ethics, can someone, define ethics in the context of capitalism. How much profit ethically is correct for a company to have and with that standard do mention some unethical companies, if Garmin falls in that then we have a point and most of the unethical behavior is legally correct and most of legal behavior we are calling unethical time and again on FW.

What the? Boy are you off topic. When I spoke to the rep they said the c330 is no longer made. In addition mine is a refurb so no upgrade qualifies. I mean I paid much less than $100 for it. If you want that free upgrade buy a $300 model and get that "warm and fuzzy" feeling that you recieved a "free" upgrade. Why do you feel you are entitled? Give me a break.

It is not meant for you. I just felt like posting here, it is a sticky topic in FW forever which every one should chime in and let us see do we have a Deep Blue in the world who can mix and match and come up with one main rule? Entire post is ok and I am not commenting on anyone. I do all that ethical or unethical in my daily life which average American does.

Lets not turn this into an ethics debate folks. Lets keep on topic.
