I went to the Garmin check update web site.

When I used a serial number for 660 I got this message.

-----------------

Update(s) available for your device:
City Navigator® North America NT 2009 Map Update Buy Disk | Buy Download

-----------------

When I used the serial number for c580 I got this message.

-----------------

Update(s) available for your device:
City Navigator® North America NT 2009 Map Update

You may be eligible to get this map update for free. Follow the steps below to find out:

1. Install our free Communicator Plug-in to communicate with your device. >> download now

2. Register your device with Garmin to see if you qualify. >> register now

--------------

Note that both units haven't been registered or turned on. Seem like no free update for 660.

Any significant change with this new version?

I just completed the free upgrade on my C550 that was a referb purchased from Buy.com a month or so ago. It took a long time - almost 2 hours for the entire process - but appears to function fine.

The new maps do have many roads in my local area that were not included in the 2008 version even though the roads have existed for several years. Of course I don't need to use a GPS in my local area near my home - I just hope that the update also includes new roads in other areas for when I travel.

Oh wow this worked on my 3 year old Nuvi 350.....

Frankly for the price i paid back then i should get a free upgrade

What are you guys entering for the product key? I'm trying to update my c330 I bought off of eBay a couple of weeks ago.

Does the 2009 map show the speed limit on the 360? I heard it shows it on the 660, is it true?

Unbelievable .. purchased a 660 new two weeks ago, and no 2009 update code either.

For the technically-savvy FW'rs, download the compressed 2009 map file (2.16 GB) and the unlock (3.22 MB) on this page.

Follow the instructions precisely, or read the comments here (http://www.mininova.org/com/1295289) before you embark on this journey.

It worked for me and my Garmin 360, but I won't vouch for it.

Didn't work for my 350 or 660 that I registered in January.

I just registered and basically found that their system give you only 30 days to download the free update. This mean that if you registered before the began date (3/1/2008 i think - you're screwed). If you register and forget to update within 30 days, you will have to make a purchase to be *legal*.

Just bought a 260 from Staples and downloading the 2009 map.

Wake up! Time to forget GPS unit.
Invest a GPS phone with 3G service, use FREE Google map and save time speaking with NON-SUPPORTIVE customer service.

Quite a lot of GPS phones are free / cheap, eg. Blackjack II, Motorola Q, Tilt, ...
With 3G data plan ($30 per month), at least you have much more fun (Priceless!).

Doing the math, phone is free + service $30 per month,
For a year with always updated map, it's just $360.
Quite a number of Garbagemin GPS would cost that much.

It didn't even know where El Yunque (the Rainforest National Park) was! I checked on the Navtek site recently and it does have it now.

I'm a bit confused reading through all these threads -- I thought something had been mentioned about Garmin's getting one free map upgrade?Presumably they've been put into the same class as the C320, which they also stopped offering the free update for a year or more ago. When I first got mine a couple of years ago they were still offering that but by last year they were not. I thought it was because it was a low end model, but maybe it's because it is discontinued or an older model. I never thought of the 660 as low end!

I'm guessing Garmin is rejecting free map upgrades on models it released more than a couple years ago, which includes the 360 and 660. This is even though the 660 has only recently become very affordable (I believe it was around $1000 when it first came out).

I'd understand if Garmin either made map updates free for all models after a certain purchase date, or none at all. But this apparent distinction on models based on release date is nonsensical. They're basically telling their consumers who buy their most established (or at least, best selling on Amazon) products to take a hike.
