being using belkin's two antenna 7230 (probably 3+ years old now) without issues. one of them is set up as a wireless bridge... used dd-wrt on them for a while, but newer versions ended up nothing but problems... Back to stock firmware works fine... |

Linksys is trying to unload these older style blue box routers. I'm sure they'll be back in stock in a day or two. |

South of Boston, MA picked one up off the shelf... it's an CGNE model - putting it at ~ version 7.2. This appears to be chancy to flash to a open source Linux kit. I suppose YMMV. Btw, still running a v1. WRT54GS (CGN1) with OpenWRT White Russian RC6. |

rigor said:does WDS support WPA-AES (the lowest form of safe encryption) now?
for a while it only supported WEP which would be pretty weak sauce. Even WPA-TKIP isn't very good.
Let me know as I'd like to try wds again but quite honestly the WEP thing turned me off since it takes like 40 minutes (on my nokia n770) to nail the wep-128 key every time. My old Linksys WRT54Gv2 and a Motorola WR850Gv2 worked in WDS mode with WPA-AES enabled. I'm curious if this newer model WRT54GS will support that as well. (Note that I had to use the newest 6.14 firmware on the motorola, and initiate the WDS from the motorola side. The linksys has no explicit WDS settings, but "lazy WDS" IS enabled in the factory firmware. Thankfully.) PS. Are you saying you can hack your own WEP key in only 40 minutes? Wow.. |

"v7 [DD-WRT v24 RC3] The WRT54GS v7 is now fully supported (if its not an intel chip - see important note below), but requires again a special flashing way, which is easier this time compared to the v5 and v6 vxworks killer. All Chips are supported, just follow step by step procedure at: [1]http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=27572&highlight=wrt54gs WARNING: There are at least two types of flash chips that are used on the v7 router. Using this method with an INTEL-type flash chip will brick your router. There is not currently a solution for using vxworkskiller with the intel-chip v7 routers. " How do we know if we have the dreaded Intel flash chip onboard? Do we have to disassemble our routers? |

I have an Airlink 430, flashed with DD-WRT. How do you guys like the WRT54gs compares to the Airlink 430? I need to buy another router and flash it as a bridge/repeater. The 430 is $17.99 now, so WRT54GS is almost 2X price of 430. |

I believe this is the model router I once had but gave away, as it seemed my microwave would interfere with it, whereas my old router which was only 802.11b had no such problem. Anybody know if microwave interference is a general problem with 802.11g, or are there certain wireless models to look for, or maybe certain microwaves ovens to avoid? |

The 430 is $17.99 now, so WRT54GS is almost 2X price of 430. how stable is the airlink 430 for you? I'm just wondering, anyone else have used one? My sister picked up one of those from fry's and I haven't dd-wrt on it yet, but she said the stock firmware is unstable with wireless... IMHO, the linksys is a solid router, but it's not as good as a Buffalo. In a all fairness, buffalo's are are hard to come by now a days, and at $30 new from a store, wrt54gs is a steal. I bought a V2 WRT54GS for $20 for my gf, I put dd-wrt on it and it has been solid for her. I personally picked up a Buffalo G125 with DD-WRT, for $25 and the buffalo is the best I've ever had. I've not had to reset it for months and months at a time. |
