This is a pretty good wireless router if you just want to use it "as is" and do NOT want to mess with DD-WRT or Tomato. Much better range with the external antennas vs the current hideous looking Linksys black routers with internal antennas.

Darn, I just bought a new router last week (this same one, but the Linux version), and paid $20 more, even after rebate. Darn, darn, and triple darn. Oh well, I don't think I could have stood not having my wireless for another day anyway.

They aren't... but you can still put DD-WRT micro on this.

This wireless router worked the first time and has "never" lost connection. Easy to setup and easy to configure. Love this router. SOLID wireless finally!

I dont see a rebate for this router. Its an instant $20 rebate.

What features in DD-WRT do most home users need/use?
Does this router support WDS? Does DD-WRT micro support WDS?
Would this router without DD-WRT be a good router for regular usage?

You could buy the Staples MAILMATE™ Junk Mail Shredder and get it for free after $40 SER and $20 Norton/Shredder rebate, but ... you need a 3rd NAV POP.
does WDS support WPA-AES (the lowest form of safe encryption) now?
for a while it only supported WEP which would be pretty weak sauce. Even WPA-TKIP isn't very good.
Let me know as I'd like to try wds again but quite honestly the WEP thing turned me off since it takes like 40 minutes (on my nokia n770) to nail the wep-128 key every time.

If you use a good, long password, its practically impossible to crack.
yeah, there's nothing wrong with TKIP, they've sealed up most of the holes in their RC4 implementation. and RC4 is still basically the fastest cipher in existence.
I got one of these a couple of months ago and the micro version of DD-WRT went on just fine. What I use it for is to pickup my wireless signal as a client, and use the wired router part to feed my computers. You can also do this to "borrow" your neighbors unprotected wireless internet and share it with multiple computers via network cables.
Don't forget you can use routers as access points, so a $30 access point/extender is niiiiiice.

does it amaze anyone else that it's been so damn difficult for engineers to get proper Wifi right? i don't get it, of course i'm not an engineer, but it's odd to me that it's been so hard to get proper, reliable-all-the-time wifi

If one invests in any off the shelf router, yes, he/she is going have issues. I have never seen anyone having issues wiht Buffalo routers. Heck even the stock Buffalo firmware is rock solid so I hear. I am not sure how ttalkman had issues. I ran my Belkin like a champ for a couple of years without trouble when I first started out. No issues then either till I found a WRT54GS which I promptly flashed to DD-WRT and have never looked back. The first Belkin, now flashed as DD-WRT is running like a champ as a repeater.
My spare set is a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 and a WHR-G54S both sealed in their boxes.
