Found this in the Fry's advert in the L.A. Times today (Friday, 5/09/08. It's $10 more than the Buy.com deal a few weeks ago but, a) no rebate required, and b) they have 'em in stock (as of 9:00 pm Friday, LA time). My buddy and I got one each in store (Burbank, CA), but they're also on line:

Good external enclosure, but this thing is louder than my computer (although my computer is nearly silent). I would say it is loud enough to be obnoxious to me and it also vibrates the table/desktop. Reviews at Newegg show the fan noise does bother some people while others do not care about noise. Can't say $30 is a good deal on this thing.

Thanks for the post! Any free ship codes?

Maybe the noise is a big problem.

Mine is nearly silent.

Other FW members report the opposite.... see this expired deal thread for discussion.

PS I have this enclosure as well and it is quiet.

Good deal OP. To bad there is no free shipping.

For anyone who wants to buy this for quiet performance, I'd suggest to buy it from the B&M for easy exchange. I bought one from amaz0n a couple of months ago and that one has a loose DC plug and the fan makes some whirling noise which can be easily heard within 10 feet in the night. Recently, I bought two for my friends and I was quite surprised to witness a great variation between them. One enclosure has a dead silent fan plugged to a circuit board that's probably > 1 year old. It's DC plug is so loose that it comes off easy by itself! The other enclosure, however, has a fan that makes terribly loud noise like a diesel generator, yet the DC plug is tight and the circuit board is the latest ver. 2.x (black board with components facing up, very sleeky). BTW one of the boxes makes squeaky sound when I open/close the cover (can't remember which). I don't know what happened to Antec's QC for this model, but I bet if I bought 10 I'd witness 10 different build quality.

Mine, from Amazon($17ar), is very, very quiet. Virtually silent. Much more quiet than you could expect from such an effective, fan cooled enclosure.

I imagine, some of the seeming variations in results is faulty (re)assemblage, despite the fact that it is incredibly simple to do so.

Ah, thx for the feedback guys. I will try to get a RMA with Antec although some person did say their RMAed/repurchased MX-1 still had the semi-loud/loud fan.
The diesel generator analogy is pretty accurate.
Seems to be a problem with quality control or perhaps some other design fault in a decent amount of MX-1 enclosures.
I expected it to be nearly silent since the specifications stated 20-22dBa (or something around 20) and it is Antec designed.

Consider your case lucky. The variation issue is more like "individual parts manufactured way off the specs and nobody in their QC catches them, or cares about." Of all the MX-1 enclosures that I examined, none of them has any assembly issue such as fan blades touching the case/wires or misaligned ports missing the contacts, whatsoever. However, it's the individual parts that are not made to the same specs. In the loose DC plug case (mentioned above in my last post), I noticed they use a different DC socket - all the holes are way wider than the others (so it's actually a miracle that the plug pins would lodge in). As an analogy it's like putting a 2W resistor down on a 1/4W design, sorry I don't have exact model #'s for those DC sockets. But you should get the drift.

@Trikat: I don't know if RMA is a sure way to get what you want. Perhaps ask them to guarantee free shipping for later exchange(s) if the first one they send out is still loud.

I can also confirm variability in this product. I got mine from Amazon about a month ago and think it's not silent but reasonably quiet (noise perceptions being subjective, of course) and has exceptional thermal management compared to the other enclosures I'm using. I had to return 2 items - the first due to a very loud fan and the next with a defective power connector. But I'm satisfied with it now that I got one that functions properly and will consider another to replace an almost silent Adaptec external hard drive toaster.

Not to be argumentative, but quite the contrary. Anyone that does happen to receive and assemble this case and experiences noise has to either examine their techniques, or consider their's among the small percentages of any manufacturing process(even high quality) that inevitably proves defective.

This is a highly reviewed, highly regarded, enclosure that is probably considered the best in class. If your's happens to be noisy, consider yourself one of the very few unlucky.

There's a reason this seems to sell out every time it's on sale, somewhere lately.

I have two and both are completely silent unless I put my head within a few inches, then theres a light whirring sound. It is quieter than my directv receiver and quieter than my old series 1 TiVo that I installed the quietest 80mm case fan on the planet in.

I also know a bunch of people with them, and none of them are any louder. So I think the loud ones are defective and I think they're in the minority.

But if the concern about noise stops any of you from running over there and buying one and running them out of stock before I can get there, then they sound like a dang jet engine!

I just got one at Fry's and it is very quiet. Also pickup a TiVo HD for $199, I would like to use this with the TiVo HD eSata port. Have anyone tried it?

got one at local Fry's. Thanks!

I have 2 of these connected to my directv DVR's, silent. In the living room and bedroom I would certainly hear any noise.
Leave it on 24/7, completely silent for last 3 months

Have had this combo in service for about a month and a half. Could not be nore satisfied. WD10EACS(Western Digital 1TB Caviar GP) installed in MX-1. Not a plug and play process. Must use a pc to prepare. Use the winmfs program from mfslive.org to prepare the drives(TiVo HD drive must be removed also to prepare).
