This is a great deal, especially considering most stand-alone Blu-Ray players cost about this much anyway. The bonus is that this player plays HD-DVDs, but there have also been hacks that now allow this player to play any region Standard DVD and PAL discs as well (search avsforum for more details). For an all-in-one unit, it doesn't get much better.
$425 for BD player is insane, since we all know by now that HD format is dead. I was just reading yesterday that profile 2.0 for blueray is coming soon, sometime next year. In teh same article in Business Week, it said that BR player is sales is dwindling because of price factor and because it does not make any marked difference over a DVD disc, for an avarage end user. Sour part of the article is that teh price of BD player will not come down below $200 till the end of 2009.

Agreed. It's a better deal for folks like me who have 20+ HD-DVD's that I don't want to rebuy if/when they become available in BD format. Transformers HD-DVD, awesome! This player with the latest firmware has now finally become the box that will push my Toshiba XA2 out the door. Upscaling SD DVD's is important (an area where the XA2 excels) but it appears from owners of the LG (AVSForums) that this unit is stellar in that regard as well. This unit is also BD2.0 ready as soon as LG releases an update to enable it and they have been pretty active in putting out updates (the latest one lets it bitstream the HD audio codecs!).
Anyway, I couldn't find a better reviewed product that satisfies all my needs which are basically, get the best picture/sound possible from whatever disc I have without worrying about what format it is. Sure we could wait until BD players get down to $200 (or less) I just don't want to, I like living for today.

This is half the price of what it used to be. i used to be like $1k.
I can't wait till bluray goes down below $200, I would buy one for my living room.

Not for me, I'm in no hurry.
The attractive thing about HD-DVD is that you can supposedly burn about 40 minutes of HD quality to a regular DVD and play it on an HD-DVD player.
Pretty tempting. I have about 17 movies + the Matrix trilogy and Planet Earth on HD-DVD that I'd rather not buy on BR again. I remember in 1998 I bought a 5 disc Sony DVD player for roughly $425 or so on eBay back then. So this isn't much of a stretch from that, and for it to play all formats is pretty impressive. With the new firmware update it plays all HD formats, hopefully later on it'll be a 2.0 BR player too. Just upgraded my receiver to Onkyo's new 606, so this would be pretty nice to go with it. Like I said, pretty tempting. Gotta talk myself into buying it lol.

$400+ for a Blu-Ray player = Not Hot.
$99 HD-DVD players FTW!
Crutchfield is fast! I ordered Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning was notified it shipped with a tracking number - wow!
For the record, people have found out how to make this player playback PAL and NTSC regular DVD's from any country. Combined with the great reviews for BD and HD content, this is an amazing deal. I got mine when the price was $80 more, and I couldn't be happier.
deal dead as it is now discontinued.
I have one of these units and LG continues to provide upgrades to the software. This unit should be able to play BR profile 2 making this a great choice.
Now showing discontinued on Crutchfield
This machine was also region-free (for DVD), IIRC.
