This is a Honeywell model 3040D. (Yes, that Honeywell.)

Price good til Tuesday, normally $50. Placed with the security products at the front of the store if you are at the SW Houston store on 59.

http://www.netaffilia.com/ads/electronics/frys/Honeywell-Laptop-Safe/2008/05/09/32043

It's advertised as a laptop safe, but I figure it's a good underbed pistol safe. It probably wouldn't fit in a bedside drawer unless you had a fairly big drawer.

I just wanted it to mainly keep my kids and firearms seperate. Better than nothing for a casual thief, plus it does have a cable if you wanted to cable it to something.

It has 5 push buttons and a * to enter, so only 6 buttons. Two rows of 3 buttons. Easy to feel in the dark, and you can set a variable length custom electronic code. It unlocks then you turn a large knob to open it.

Of course has a key override. Comes with 2 keys. BATTERIES INCLUDED.

This is the cheapest I saw using Froogle, and for a gun safe, I didn't see any cheaper with an electronic lock.

It's also fire resistant and has eggshell foam on the bottom. You could get into it with a hammer probably but again, it's more of a safety item with some antitheft benefits for a good price in my book.

Would easily hold 2-3 pistols or extra clips etc.

Of course, it's also a pretty decent lockbox for any sort of light use.

From Wal Mart.com:

# Large enough for laptops up to 17?
# Includes a 48? security cable (torque strength of 660 lbs)
# Double Steel Wall Construction with Fire Retardant Insulation

Other info from variosu sites:
5.62" x 17.56" x 12.81"

Rated well on the few reviews I could find, I'm happy with mine, and I think the price is good for the product and great for a 'gun safe'. That adds a bunch to the cost just like when you put 'aviation grade' on something.

nice deal, thanks

My macbook air would be great in this. Especially for those long sessions at starbucks.

How long does it take you to enter the combination (in the dark) in the event your home is burglarized?

alert mods

Great, you can add some compact PDW in there like the MP5K Suitcase.

alert mods

Not long. It's 2 rows of three buttons each, and you can use a variable number of digits. 3 numbers plus star isn't much to enter for example. You can enter your own code, so say, '113' (1st and last digits on top row) and star (last on the bottom row) is pretty easy to find in the dark. Or all 2's or 5s whatever is easy for you to get in but will keep kids and opportunistic burglars out. 10 seconds would probably a slow time.

Also if you enter the wrong code I think three times it locks for 4 minutes, requiring a key override.

Keep the keys close too just in case. You still have to turn the knob with the key too, so another safety factor to keep especially younger children out.

Again, I think this is a good balance between easy to get in, safe for those of you with children, and making thievery more difficult.

Ugh... that is IMO one of the best ever... you can still pick up the suitcases i believe in the USA... now as for the full auto MP5 (and '-k' kompact, no less...) good luck

Good, it sounds like a better option than I'm using right now - hiding my gun in places where I may forget it's hidden. lol

This is a great deal for a pistol safe - I will get one or two tomorrow.

But for most people - home security - IMHO
2 choices -
1/ Pump action 12 gauge or 20 gauge with one round unchambered - yell " I have a gun - get out now." Chamber the round and blow out your window.that will scare the chet out of 99.9%
2/ 17% pepper spray in 16oz bear size - - yell "I have a gun , get out now" and prepare to spray

One of my instructors has a loaded 12 gauge under his bed... since he kept a lot of audio equipments in the house so he is armed. Funny thing is... he has 6 shells in there and according to him, first two will punch a hole in the thief and/or the car's gas tank, then the next 2 will light it on fire and the last two will turn the rest into cheese...

Can't really do the shotgun thing if you live in an apartment in the city - don't wanna blast through walls and kill a neighbor if I have to shoot at a burglar. I have a handgun with Glaser bullets (they are frangible and won't penetrate walls).

This would be the first thing a thief would steal from your home--a portable small safe.

Not if you've got it chained to your bed. I'd also hope a thief wouldn't make it to your room before you heard him.

Birdshot or any type of grain should not go through drywall or the walls. Slugs on the other hand....yea, not good for an apartment setting. Spray and pray brother!

Depends. First you're going to be awaken from your sleep, some people are light sleepers etc...This safe looks like it uses the Simplex push buttons system, while I don't own this particular safe I do own a handgun safe that uses the Simplex buttons, my safe can be set to open in one press of a button or up to 5 buttons. I have mine set to open in 3 presses. My combination is set by you pressing down 2 different buttons at the same time, then a single buton and another single button then turn a little crank to open the spring activated door. You can change the combo as well to your liking. This safe can be cracked by your kids (sooner or later) if they know where your safe is hidden. Mine has 5 buttons but still thousands of possible combos (don't know exact possibilities)

Or if you could load with these...
SeasonShot
That would make them tasty.

Just a heads up, but Big Lots constantly has various small electronic Honeywell safes for $15 - $25.

Since people seemed primarily concerned about the 'in the dark' issue, I did a little experiment and posted a pic and some details in my blog:

You could always turn on a bedside table too.

Most thieves would probably be on the way out when the lights start coming on , and if they don't, well since you're well into your gun safe now they're probably going out one way or the other at this point.
