Dell sure it taking their sweet time in bringing back the sc440 deal. Times must be hard over there. This is a great deal though if you're looking for a tower though!

A couple of weeks ago they had 35% off (so the discount increases are you add configuration) all the servers in the Smart Deals/Dell Deals section, including the sc1430, sc440, and poweredge 840, and included SBS 2003 R2.

Wait for it again, it will come back soon.

Dell usually have great deals right at the end of the Dell fiscal quarter. Look for the best deals at the end of January, April, July, and October. They put on good deals to get more sales so it doesn't look like Dell is losing sales when they report to the Securities & Exchange Commission every three months. A drop in sales would drop the stock price.

This looks like a good deal. Too bad it doesn't come with enough for me use it as a desktop.

this is 65nm tech

and Dell still sell sc440 with PD. I believe Dell server will never ever catch up the generation gap again.

It depends; most techs charge $120/hr or more for onsite work. I suspect a basic install could bill half a day before they started configuring the server components.

Also, $500 is a good price for a 5 CAL SBS, but I'm not sure I'd go 2003 now. I have heard (through a very reputable source) that 2008 is very good. I'm half tempted to drop my SBS since I'm not using it, though, and the unRaid I've been running at home is very stable. I thought I'd get the exchange server running for group calendaring and contacts, but it hasn't happened in a year and a half, and managing it just isn't very easy (I don't use it for email). I think I'd rather learn linux from scratch than learn exchange.

If you wanted to use this as a workstation for rendering, cad, FEA, photoshop etc then you would definitely benefit from a faster processor which starts adding a ton of money to the system.

You'd also want more memory, 8 gigs or so which is about another $300 upgrade. Throw in a firegl V5600 for $479.

But still an awesome deal.

You cannot get a decent video card to work with this system.

I have it running on a test server. Know that it just came out, so there are bugs - it looks a lot like Vista so I expect some Vista-esque issues. For companies who need a server now, 2008 would not be a good choice at all IMHO. Think about the incompatibilities with some business software packages, bugs, etc. It would be a nightmare. Gotta take some time for it to smooth out, just like any other Microsoft product.

I didnt see any PCIx16 slots in the specs, I guess I just assumed it had them.

If it doesnt have any PCIx16 slots then its applications are more limited.

you actually can, it just won't run at 16x The cards will only run at 4x

Mechwarrior - pray tell, how do you install a PCI-Express card in this thing?
Have you got any supporting links, because I was under the impression that it didn't work.

If it DOES work, though, I will be all over one of these, happy as a puppy on a pork-chop.

When was the last time a PowerEdge server works with a x16 PCI-E graphic card (even in an x8 slot)? 420SC maybe?

Forget it, it won't work. Dell has tried very hard to stop people from using their servers as workstations. Do a search on FW on previous PE deals. There were always people getting it as worksation, and guess what, go to the last page and see those people whine because it won't work.

And I will make a prediction again - someone will (again) buy this PE as workstation, and will again come back here and post "It doesn't work, what should I do" about 3 to 4 weeks from now.
