Most of this stuff is routinely available at Campmor and STP (after discounts) at similar prices. MRSP are greatly inflated. Almost bought the 36" rolling drop bottom duffel bag a while back but the reviews on construction quality were not that good.

My feelings exactly. I own three of the 36" drop bottoms and they have not held up, after only a few trips. I got them for $60 (to reinforce your assertion that better deals can/have be had). I wouldn't buy them again, though. I spent the bucks and our entire family now uses XL Eagle Creek ES Cargo Duffels for $90 each. More money, but MUCH less weight and lifetime 'no matter what' warranty. They've got cinch straps in case you can't fill the bag entirely before 50 lbs and the straps wrap all-the-way around. The build quality IS really that much better.

I travel a lot and buy a lot of luggage. I cannot stress enough to avoid the High Sierra at all cost. It looks good and at first blush seems decent enough.....

I also bought the 36" drop bottom for ski gear. Well I used on a business trip. First time I used it one of the zippers broke. No problem, there is was a 2nd zipper. Next trip AT THE AIRPORT the 2nd zipper broke when I tried to take something out to reduce the weight. I couldn't believe it!! 2nd time used and and totally useless. I had to borrow tape and a box from the airline just to complete my trip. I e-mailed them and got no response. WORSE LUGGAGE EVER!!! And nothing from customer service.

One the flip side, I had a very minor issue with a three year old Columbia duffel that I used 15+ times a year, Columbia replaced the bag for free (actually upgrading me to the next nicer bag) including shipping for free.

Buy Columbia, Eagle Creek, or even REI brand (btw I just picked up an REI 30" rolling duffel on close out color for $50 that is awesome).

Rant over...
