not bad if you need it now for personal use. For all you ebayers - there is not much profit on just an upgraded graphics card.

Man, CPU upgrades are expensive, why is that? These 1.4 just junk, who wants to get a great computer which has a 4 cylender engine.

It's a laptop. Most people don't use their laptops for anything other than surfing the net.

any reason to not take away -25 to downgrade the ram to 1GB?
last I checked, you can get 2GB of ram for that price.

There are only 2 sodimm sockets. So it may not be worth the hassle. 2gb is plenty for general office use and web browsing.

ehhh i thought i'd be mad that I just got in on the vostro 1000 deal last week.... but im not. Nothing more special here, unless you really hate amd.

wow much better than yesterday's XPS 1530. In for one.

Huh?

If only our orders would have went through for the xps1530 we'd have gotten a much better deal...faster processor...vista premium instead of basic...Wireless 5720 EVDO Mini Card for Verizon...Finger Print Reader...the letters "xps" across the back of your laptop always makes people envious...Tuxedo black...forgive me I'm only dreaming...If only!

If all you do is surf the net why spend this money then? Go buy refurbished celeron for $250, or new after rebate for $300.

where do you see $300 after rebate or refurb for $250?

For XP maybe, but not with Vista sitting at the table.

It may be for that price but keep in mind that the second dimm slot is under the keyboard. While it's not that hard to do, IMO I'd rather have them do the work instead.

Because surfing the net probably also includes sites like youtube, myspace, facebook and other media-rich sites that require a certain amount of power to run smoothly. I'm sure they'd like to 'multitask' and have multiple windows open at once too. A celeron may not cut it in that case.

These things were about $450 a few months ago. I picked one up back than and it's pretty nice for a sub $500 lappy. Only thing, it is a little heavy for what it is.

Is this a good machine for playing Starcraft (Broodwars)?

How are Dells in general? I've never owned a Dell notebook before. Do you think the processor is too weak to play my game?

wow if it werent for the $40 webcam and the 1.4ghz processor I would jump at this deal. Anyone else can provide coupons to this?
This system can definitely play broodwars.

Hey jschuman did it have the same specs when you brought it for 450? and why was it so cheap?

Can I have more red? Thanks in advance.

Seriously, I have a Vostro 1500 w/ 2 GB of memory with Vista Home installed and it is painfully slow. I like the "potential" of Vista, but it doesn't work with 2 GBs on this computer from my Personal Experience

I'm a developer and I have a dual-boot configuration on my 1500 w Vista and XP Professional for my developer tools. The XP setup works fine w/o issue.

When individuals receive their machine and start surfing the web, they will grow tired of that Vista busy swirling circle every time they click on something.

I welcome the purchasers of this laptop to report the speed results when they receive their system and start using it.

In for 1! thanks OP

I have to agree. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but till as recently as mid-April it was possible to upgrade the processor to T7250 (2.0ghz) for $130 additional. But now all such upgrades are a steep $175! I thought processor prices are supposed to fall over time.

The reason Vista feels sluggish on this laptop is the superfetch "feature" that loads programs into the memory on startup. While this works fine for a desktop with a 7,200 rpm hard drive, it's not so hot for the slower 5,400 hard drive. I would just turn this feature off, especially if you shut down and reboot the laptop a lot. I still wouldn't recommend Vista for someone used to XP and not particularly interested in learning the new OS layout, but Vista really isn't as bad as many make it out to be.

So do you recommend XP Home over Vista if I order this machine?
