Roku Netflix Player

Sorta-hot deal...NetFlix 'unlimited' account required, unlimited NetFlix viewing (presently 10K movie titles, TVshows, etc.), no other monthly fees. Box is wired AND wireless, HD-capable when NF is HD-capable. This may interest quite a few of us who've been waiting...and waiting...for this to materialize. Ain't perfect, and will be obsolete after a few years, but at $99, I'll get my $$ worth in that time.

Thanks for the rhed, RH, glad to see you still around, contributing in a positive way.

Cash Back is available from FatWallet!

.

The NetFlix Player is HD-ready.

What you need to enjoy your NetFlix Player by Roku:

An active NetFlix membership with unlimited rentals
If you’re already a NetFlix member getting unlimited DVDs, you’re all set. If not, sign up now for an unlimited plan (starting as low as $8.99 a month).

A high-speed Internet connection – DSL or Cable
Typical high-speed connections easily meet the player’s 1.5 Mbps minimum recommended speed. (If you’re unsure of your connection speed, you should ask your Internet service provider.)

Wireless or wired Internet access at your TV
Your Internet connection needs to reach your TV for the player to work. If you’ve ever surfed the Web or retrieved e-mail from the room where your TV is, you should be fine.

A television – young or old
Obviously you need a TV. The standard cables included with the player will connect it to virtually any television.

The NetFlix Player by Roku allows you to watch NetFlix movies and TV shows instantly on your TV. Buy a NetFlix Player by Roku and connect it into your TV and your broadband home network. Make a list of movies and TV shows you want to see at NetFlix.com. At your TV, use the remote control to select and play your selections. Whatever you want to watch, whenever you want to watch. It will start playing in as little as 30 seconds.

A NetFlix subscription with unlimited DVDs is required. Unlimited refers to the number of DVDs you can receive in a month. Most NetFlix plans are unlimited. Unlimited plans start at $8.99 a month.

The NetFlix Player is HD-ready. It has all the connections you need to connect it to your HDTV, and it’s capable of playing back HD content. When NetFlix releases HD content for Instant Watching, the NetFlix Player by Roku will be ready.

The NetFlix Player by Roku is HD-ready. NetFlix is working to make movies and TV episodes available in HD. When they are ready, your NetFlix Player by Roku will also be ready.

In order to use The NetFlix Player, you need an active NetFlix account, a high-speed Internet connection (minimum 1.5 Mbps), a home network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and a TV.

You need at least 1.5 Mbps to watch movies instantly on The NetFlix Player by Roku. The faster your connection, the better the quality. For high quality video and audio, a connection of least 4.0 Mbps is recommended. You can test your bandwidth at one of these sites:

Include premium cables with your player?
Cables to connect your NetFlix Player to a standard TV (red, white and yellow audio & video connections) are included with your purchase.

But if you have an HDTV, home theater or A/V receiver, consider this convenient opportunity to save on a complete set of premium cables delivered with your player.

Get three cables – 6’ HDMI, 6’ Component Video and 6’ Optical Audio – for just $19.99 (typically more than $40 at retail).

FYI: I just read an article in a recent industry magazine that amongst other things indicated that in their latest earnings conference call with analysts and investors, NetFlix senior management made it rather clear that they cannot afford to continue spending the massive amounts of money they have been on the free streaming without collecting supplemental fees to offset it. This wasn't written in stone and no exact date or pricing was set but just be aware you may have to start paying a few extra bucks a month (somehow or another) for all that streaming.

this is Blah, you can do the same with your laptop/desktop. Its just the Instant section which is kinda lame actually. Save your $99 and use your laptop and plug it to your TV if you want.

I think this is a very cool idea. I'd be more tempted if NetFlix had better online content.

be careful, comcrap likes to cancel accounts without notice if you use up too much bandwidth, which this thing apparently uses alot of.

In for one

8.95 a month is less then HBO and cinema charges. I will cancel HBO and Max with cable.

gizmodo review - looks sexy. i'm going to hold out to see if they wind up pulling off something similar on xbox 360 or ps3.

This looks like a very interesting unit and idea. But why do they limit its use to NetFlix? If in addition to NetFlix I could stream audio and video on my hard drive to the box (upnp support), I'd definitely buy it. Strange that Roku would so limit its functionality.

I have been holding out for the PS3 movie download too. But they plan on charging per movie. $8.95 month looks more appealing then charge per movie.

One side note. I called NetFlix and they said that new releases will still have to go US mail because they are not ready to be streamed. CSR said they were notified yesterday of this box. So with this box you can download unlimited Blue Ray and regular format which are not a real new release. Still provides 10,000 movies to choose from.
